The iconic Absolute World Towers in Canada are renowned for their progressively curved exteriors, earning them the nickname "The Marilyn Monroe Buildings" due to their exceptionally beautiful curves. This time, 3D modeling will be a challenge for this unique architectural masterpiece. The Monroe Buildings' structure and layers of glass windows intertwine, reflecting sunlight in stunning ways. How will this slender, textured object fare in 3D printing ?
Only the Ultimaker S5 can handle such a large size. We chose a two-color, support-free 3D printing method and used the finest layer thickness of 0.15mm. The slicing software Cura 3.6 automatically calculates the estimated printing time. After pressing "Start Printing," let the Ultimaker S5 run for two and a half days until the printing is complete.
This time, we happened to run out of materials. The Ultimaker S5 has an automatic material shortage detection system, which thoughtfully waits until new cables are available before continuing printing, so we don't have to worry about printing failures due to running out of cables.
Wow! It's like magic! Just put it in, print it out, and the finished product is super easy. Even before disassembling it, you can see the gradual light and shadow of the architectural model itself. The windows are distinguished by white PLA , while the structural parts are distinguished by silver PLA .
Different angles reveal different light and shadow effects, fully showcasing the unique features of the structure itself. 3D printing has also been increasingly used in the construction industry for visual models in the early stages of construction (further reading: How does architecture go from concept to award through 3D printing? ). In the past, models were usually made of wood, EK board, or other foamed materials, which was time-consuming and difficult to modify.
Using 3D printing not only makes the process faster and easier to modify, but it also saves valuable production time, allowing you to focus your energy on design and brainstorming instead of staying up all night to rush models, resulting in better outcomes.
The Ultimaker S5 features a dual-nozzle system, allowing it to be used with water-soluble PVA support. However, for this test, we opted for two-color printing without a support structure. In this 3D printing mode, we also took close-up photos of the internal details. You can see that the supportless silver exterior structure has a gradually sloping, stacked layer. Designers consider these structural elements in the early 3D modeling stages, ensuring a smooth and beautiful finished product – a crucial aspect of 3D printing .
