[3D Printing Application] Ultimaker Mixed Material Testing: TPU Elastic Eyeglass Frame

SanDiMa's first-hand test is back! Last time we shared our experience with Sinterit flexible eyeglass frames using SLS technology (further reading: Super-elastic swimming goggle frames "powder" debut! ), so how about FDM 's TPU material? We couldn't resist testing it for you first, let's see how it performs after completion:



The original 3D model is already very cool. A link is provided at the end of the article so you can test it yourself.



This time, we used TPU in combination with PVA . While Ultimaker's official documentation doesn't recommend using these two materials simultaneously, SanDiMa wanted to be the first to try this approach. We used the Ultimaker S5 for 3D printing , with very detailed preset parameters. The dual-head system can print two different materials at once, and the support structure forms automatically, eliminating the need for manual setup.



This time, a lattice-like support structure is used. The white part in the picture is PVA , which can be dissolved in water, and the black part is the TPU of the frame body.



After more than a day, the printing is complete! Next, we put it in water to soak and wait for the PVA to completely dissolve. Although regular cold water is fine, for larger objects, we use an air pump in the water tank to speed up the dissolution process.



This 3D printing project , which used PVA to support the dissolved TPU elastic eyeglass frame, has finally been completed. Compared to the usual method of removing the support, the surface is cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing.





Industrial-grade TPU 95A (thermoplastic polyurethane) filaments possess properties between rubber and plastic; they are semi-flexible, chemically resistant, and have strong mechanical properties. Furthermore, they are easier and faster to 3D print than other TPU materials.
