The LEGO Group has released its seasonal day sets, a major announcement in the consumer additive manufacturing (AM) space. One set, titled "LEGO Icons Holiday Express," utilizes the company's first mass-produced 3D-printed components. This functional train combines LEGO connectors with "internal functionality only possible with AM."
Every year, LEGO's holiday sets are highly anticipated, with parents scrambling to buy them as Christmas gifts and adult LEGO fans eager to add them to their collections. This year, we expect the holiday express train set to extend its popularity to another group—3D printing enthusiasts.

This 3D-printed train is one of 956 pieces in the LEGO Icons Holiday Express series, and it's LEGO's first large-scale product release. LEGO wrote in a press release, "This set is the perfect finishing touch for holiday decorations, featuring a 16-piece circular track that can be installed on a table or around a Christmas tree. Fans can even power the train using the LEGO Power Upgrade Kit."
Ronen Hadar, Head of Additive Design and Manufacturing at the LEGO Group, posted on LinkedIn revealing more details about the 3D-printed train parts, including that they are manufactured using an EOS 3D printer based on Fine Detail Resolution (FDR) technology. FDR is a powder-based polymer 3D printing technology that integrates an ultra-fine CO laser for ultra-fine detail and high-precision printing. Hadar stated that this system is crucial for achieving "high precision and high quality… meeting LEGO's standard quality and safety requirements."

This release marks a significant step forward for LEGO in the field of 3D printing—an area we've been following closely for the past few years. In 2022, LEGO released its first official 3D printed item: a LEGO Duck, given as a gift to guests at an adult LEGO House fan event. At the time, Hadar stated, "The team has been working with our talented designers to develop, approve, and manufacture this super cool component. This is a significant milestone for the team. We look forward to sharing more with you in the future." However, this duck was not released to the public and was not mass-produced. In this sense, the holiday train set is an important start.
The LEGO Icons Holiday Express set (recommended for ages 18 and up) will be officially released to LEGO Insiders on October 1, 2025, with the official release date on October 4, 2025. The set will be priced at $129.99 (€119.99 / £109.99).
