[3D Printing Applications] Ultimaker and 3D Anatomy Software: Creating a New Era in Clinical Medicine!

The Ultimaker S5 has been certified by Materialise as a 3D printer compatible with the medical software Mimics inPrint, used for creating clinical orthopedic, maxillofacial, and cardiovascular models. The two companies collaborated to ensure the Ultimaker S5 is highly compatible with Materialise's Mimics inPrint software to comply with FDA regulations for clinical 3D printing .



The Importance of FDA Certification
While free commercial medical imaging software is becoming increasingly available and easier to obtain, under strict standards, models sold for diagnostic purposes must be created using FDA-approved software; for example, Materialise's Mimics inPrint was the first FDA-approved 3D printing software . Materialise chose to partner with Ultimaker. 3D printers are working together to create a safe, stable, and easy-to-use 3D printing environment for patient care ; to date, 16 of the top 20 hospitals in the United States use this software.



"Our collaboration with Ultimaker will enhance the applicability of 3D-printed anatomical models to aid in surgical planning and team communication," said Brian, the company's North American General Manager. The Ultimaker S5 is capable of mass-producing life-size 3D-printed anatomical models and opens doors for patient care and medical communication.



Ushering in a New Era of Patient Care
As 3D printing is increasingly used in treatment planning and diagnosis, many hospitals recognize that physical anatomical models can help diagnose patients, plan surgeries, and discuss treatments that rely on 2D images. "With FDA approval, when Mimics inPrint is used in conjunction with Ultimaker , healthcare systems can have greater confidence in the safety and quality of these 3D printing processes," emphasized John, President of Ultimaker North America.
