[3D Printing Applications] Sneak Peek at Matte Lustrous Materials at the Beike Interactive Design Exhibition!


Following our previous New Generation Design Exhibition, we're coming to Songshan Creative Park with Taipei University of Technology! The graduation exhibition of the Department of Interactive Design at Taipei University of Technology uses an interactive laboratory as its theme, showcasing works centered around VR, AR, apps, games, interactive installations, and projection art. There are also four Ultimaker 3D printers on-site for on-site printing!


The interactive lab-themed exhibition features many abstract 3D-printed spheres, using the light and shadow properties of different filaments to create a sense of rhythm. We'll now share how these spherical particles, possessing both balance and abstractness, were created. These particles visually represent restlessness and liveliness. Since their basic shape is a perfect circle, we cut them in half for 3D printing , saving a significant amount of support material and shortening printing time. The 7cm diameter sphere appears quite miniature within the large Ultimaker S5 .


To create the interplay of light and shadow, in addition to Ultimaker 's black PLA cable, we also used Spider Maker 's matte black PLA . Our tests revealed that the matte black PLA gripped the printing platform quite tightly. Therefore, as you can see in the Cura , we added an extra layer of PVA at the bottom for 3D printing . Comparing the effects of the two PLA materials , the image on the left shows a matte black 3D printed product, which has a matte texture and soft light and shadow, but lacks the refracted light of the Ultimaker black PLA product on the right. Both materials have their advantages. Matte black is more suitable for products that require elegance and low reflectivity, while regular PLA has a finished product-like gloss.
