[3D Printing Case Study] Taiwan's innovative design capabilities are making their way into the European market!


Medium2 Studio is a startup dedicated to product design aesthetics, adhering to the belief that product appearance and practicality go hand in hand. Two of its office chairs are currently best-selling in the European market. These two chairs, designed for a renowned German furniture manufacturer, were developed by Medium2 Studio using the Ultimaker 3D printer .

The SN-07 of these two office chairs achieved sales far exceeding market expectations and boasts high quality that meets European safety standards; it is this demanding pursuit of both aesthetics and practicality that has won them favor in the European market.

This young design company has various processing equipment, such as 3D printers , CNC machines, and laser cutting machines , enabling it to develop and produce samples internally. Stepping into the office, the walls are covered with various design sketches, and the tables are filled with a dazzling array of project models.


Product development is a lengthy process. The use of 3D printing not only allows us to see the actual appearance of the finished product, but also corrects visual errors between imagination and reality (such as the Penrose illusion), preventing huge losses due to structural mistakes in the later stages of development. From sketches to 3D modeling and 3D printed samples, repeated confirmation is required before a 1:1 model is created to confirm ergonomics and comfort. The structural components are then incorporated into the 1:1 model, finally leading to the mold-making stage.


The company currently uses 3D printing at a 1:4 scale, which is most efficient for development. Besides allowing customers to easily estimate the actual size, it also significantly reduces printing time. Notably, because PVA is only used at a small junction between the object body and the PLA support, the large area of ​​the bottom PLA support can be removed, and then the PVA can be quickly dissolved in an ultrasonic cleaner, greatly shortening production time. Taking the SN-07 model as an example, it only takes five days from Ultimaker 3D printing to the final model completion, and it can be provided to customers for product evaluation. The realism of these scale models is almost identical to the final product. In addition to the model's shape simulation, it can actually demonstrate the effects of disassembly, stacking, packaging and shipping, which is the key to successfully winning design proposals. Furthermore, the in-house laser cutting machine is used to create exclusive outer packaging protective samples for the exquisite models.


Initially, the company tried other 3D printers , but due to many considerations such as the relatively complex shape and structure of the office chair, the need to avoid disassembling parts for printing to save time, product precision, and aesthetically pleasing support contact surfaces, the Ultimaker dual-printer 3D printer became the most economical and efficient perfect choice.
