[3D Printing Education] A Grand Exploration of New York Museums! Five Courses to Explore the Renaissance!
Since 1870, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has been a source of inspiration for artists. For the past two years, the Ultimaker community team has been involved in the museum's "Teens Take the Met" program, connecting educators and students to learn about 3D printing technology and explore these world-class collections. They have also inspired reflection on art and art history through "The Met Set," a class using the Ultimaker 3D printer .
The Met Set integrates various educational programs, and combining 3D printing with The Met Set into their curriculum will help educators achieve the following goals:
Self-exploration and pursuit of goals
• Utilize design thinking skills and learn teamwork
Understand prototyping and testing techniques.
• Develop communication skills through continuous sharing
During Teens Take the Met, they invited 3D printing enthusiasts to try the " Ultimaker Design Engine Starter Pack" challenge. Using the Starter Pack helped students create a large number of new projects in class and encouraged deeper exploration of desktop 3D printers . To inspire students to develop unique projects, the Starter Pack has a flexible set of rules that adapt to various playstyles, numbers of players, and technical backgrounds; teachers found that these exercises struck a good balance between classroom assignments and challenging final topics.

In addition to providing inspiring courses for educators and students, games are also incorporated into the "Teens Take the Met" program; for example, the "Design Engine" course is particularly inspiring! Below are the activities and courses developed for the Metropolitan Museum of Art since December:
Course 1 – Hack the Museum
Students are challenged to scan museum collections, drawing inspiration from original works of great art.

Course 2 – Lithophanes
This section introduces the concept of traditional craftsmanship, showing how intricate etched or molded patterns can be clearly seen in thin-walled, translucent porcelain when backlit. By converting flat images into three-dimensional layers of varying heights, a relief-like effect can be achieved using a 3D printer .
There are several ways to create these embossed images. One very simple method is to drag images, JPGs, PNGs, etc., into Ultimaker Cura's slicing software and convert the darkest areas of the image into multiple layers to create an opaque effect.
Course 3 – Design Engine
The course "The Met Set" is combined with a brain-teasing card game, and then the students generate their own design prototypes through inspiration and discussion.
Course 4 – Cylinder Seals
In the Middle Ages, primitive seals from Mesopotamia were cylindrical objects that could roll on various clay surfaces. When a seal was pressed, these stamps were used to indicate which authority or noble came from which document, somewhat like a modern signature or wax seal.
This course requires students to recreate ancient seals or create their own modern versions using Photoshop, Inkscape, and Fusion 360.
Lesson 5 – Lesson Sparks
This is a series of ideas for courses designed to inspire educators or teachers to come up with their own themes. These inspirations include: designing an Egyptian temple, making an ancient mask, or designing your own monster, etc.
The museum's collaboration with Ultimaker has brought much new creativity and thought to students and educators. We are delighted to see more people utilizing 3D printing and look forward to more science museums and educational institutions following suit. We are happy to share information and developments related to 3D printing ; please follow us for the latest news.
