Things to note when using Snapmaker CNC machining...

Like previous Snapmaker models, the CNC mode is the easiest for beginners to use. CNC engraving is one of the lesser-known of Artisan's three functions. While there are many laser machines and 3D printers to compare it to, everything becomes a bit tricky with CNC. However, just like the laser module, the CNC module locks in place, and similarly, the laser machine's quick-release baseplate can be quickly switched to the CNC option.

After the module is installed, calibration is required. This process is surprisingly simple and only takes a few minutes. Once completed, you can begin laying out your design! Using Luban's built-in tools, you can again draw your artwork in a similar way to using the laser module. Once ready, you can use the touchscreen to set the machine's movements.

CNC machining function test

The Snapmaker CNC function is surprisingly easy to use, and after a while cutting shapes in wood and plastic, you'll realize there's a lot of room for creativity. However, the 200 watts of power is indeed a bit insufficient; while it can handle intricate details, it would be better suited for heavier metals, even just 3mm thin sheets. Nevertheless, considering this is a 3-in-1 machine, the CNC capabilities are impressive, demonstrating the ease of use of Luban software.

The Snapmaker Luban software is the heart of the system, allowing you to interact with every module and purpose of the machine. Best of all, the software interface remains consistent across all the different functions. This makes it easy to grasp manufacturing techniques that might otherwise be unfamiliar. Another part of the system is, of course, the large 7-inch touchscreen next to the machine. This enhances the user experience, allowing you to easily navigate different settings, monitor progress, and make adjustments as needed.

Returning to the CNC module, it is primarily used for wood, but can also carve acrylic and soft stone. A complete list of supported materials is as follows: wood (walnut, beech, pine), high-density fiberboard, medium-density fiberboard, plywood, jade, carbon fiber, acrylic, epoxy toolboard, and PCB.

To use CNC mode, you'll need to change the tool head and build plate. The Snapmaker Artisan has a wooden work surface with holes for attaching special jigs to hold your material. Unlike laser and 3D printing tool heads, the machine waits until your work is ready to cut before calibrating. After the material is clamped on the work surface, you'll be asked to set the origin. Next, you'll run the toolpath over the jig to see if everything is in place. Finally, you can set the Z-height, similar to setting the Z-height on a 3D printer, using a sheet of paper between the CNC cutter head and the material you want to sculpt.

When using CNC, the emergency stop button on the control module can be very useful, allowing you to stop the tool quickly before it hits the fixture.

Snapmaker Luban offers preset settings for different types of blades to help you get started. Snapmaker provides a sample model, Luban Lock, which is a puzzle you carve from the provided 10mm MDF board. The piece below was completed in just 36 minutes, and its edges are remarkably smooth.

Let's conclude this section!

Summarize

The Snapmaker Artisan is an innovative 3-in-1 machine that builds upon the functionality, features, and size of the Snapmaker 2.0, allowing you to perform 3D printing, laser engraving, and CNC machining all in one machine. The high precision is truly outstanding for all three modules and applications, and while it may not be the fastest compared to dedicated options, its speed is still quite impressive. This level of quality is achieved for each application, thanks in part to its robust build quality and user-friendly interface, especially the excellent Luban software. Although the initial cost is higher, the Artisan's versatility and performance are definitely worth the price, especially when you need three machines and have limited space.

Compared to its predecessor, Artisan represents a significant leap forward. Switching between modes is quick and easy, and fist-sized screws are no longer needed. This 3D printer is enormous, capable of printing in two colors, and features an all-metal hot end. The housing is now also integrated into the machine, making it easier to print on engineering-grade materials. The laser is faster and more powerful, capable of cutting through 8mm wood and acrylic. CNC is 300% more powerful and twice as fast. However, when you consider the space savings from combining all three machines, plus the custom software running all the equipment, it all makes perfect sense.

However, once you find enough space for the Artisan, whether you're an amateur looking to explore new creative ideas or a professional who needs a 3-in-1 machine, the Snapmaker Artisan is a great option!
