1. Touchscreen

You can control the Ultimaker S5 using the touchscreen in front of the printer.
The first time you open Ultimaker S5, the printer will begin a setup wizard. After that, the main menu will appear when you open the printer.

The main menu offers three options, as shown in the image below:

Status Overview: A status overview will automatically appear next to the main menu. From here, you can start printing via USB or view the printing progress.

The settings overview displays the printer's current settings. Here you can see which print nozzles, materials, and print platforms are installed, and you can change the settings.

The main menu overview contains three sub-menus: Settings, Maintenance, and Network. In the printer settings menu, you can change general settings such as language.
In addition to storing maintenance records, the maintenance menu also allows you to perform the most important maintenance and calibration procedures.
The network menu allows you to change network settings or perform Wi-Fi settings.

II. Materials

Material compatibility

The Ultimaker S5 is equipped with two AA print nozzles and one BB print nozzle. The AA print nozzles can be used to print construction materials and separate support materials.
BB print nozzles can be used with water-soluble support materials (PVA).
The Ultimaker S5 supports all current Ultimaker materials, most of which can be printed using all print nozzle sizes (0.25, 0.4, and 0.8 mm). The following overview shows which materials are compatible with which print nozzle sizes.
This compatibility table is for single extrusion printing.

Please refer to the table below for possible combinations of bi-extruded materials.

Although the Ultimaker S5 features an open material system, it is recommended to use Ultimaker materials on the printer. All Ultimaker materials are extensively tested and optimized in Ultimaker Cura to ensure optimal printing results. Therefore, it is recommended to use one of the preset configuration profiles in Ultimaker Cura for the highest reliability. Using Ultimaker materials also allows you to benefit from the NFC detection system. The Ultimaker S5 automatically recognizes Ultimaker cables, and when connected to a network, this information is transmitted directly to Ultimaker Cura, achieving a seamless connection between the printer and the Ultimaker Cura software.

Printing suggestions

Each material requires different settings for optimal results. If you prepare your model using Ultimaker Cura, these settings will be automatically selected if the correct nozzle, material, and print platform type are chosen. Ensure you are using the latest version of Ultimaker Cura as your most up-to-date print configuration file.
For all materials supported on the Ultimaker S5, you must use a glass or aluminum printing platform for adhesion.
If you are using a glass printing platform, it is recommended to apply a thin layer of glue (using the lipstick glue in the accessory box) or adhesive board to the glass printing platform before you begin printing. This ensures that your printed items are securely attached to the printing platform and prevents the glass printing platform from breaking when removing the material.
✔Friendly reminder: When changing the print platform, you need to change the print platform settings on the printer.

III. Using Cura
Preparing to print with the Ultimaker Cura interface: After adding Ultimaker S5 to Ultimaker Cura, you can see the main interface. Here is an overview of the interface.

Slice Model
Slicing models in Ultimaker Cura:
1. Load the model by clicking to open the file icon.
2. In the sidebar (right side of the screen), check that the material, print nozzles, and print platform are correct.
3. Use adjustment tools to position, scale, and rotate the model.
4. In the print settings, select the desired settings (layer thickness/print speed, fill, support, and print platform adhesion).
5. To view the results of the selection settings, change the viewing mode from solid view to layer view.
6. In the bottom right corner, select Print via Internet, save the file or save to USB, depending on the printing method.
✔Helpful Reminder: When using support printing, you can select which support structure the extruder should use. This allows you to use PVA supports on the Ultimaker S5.
Separate supports or construct material supports to print the model.
✔ Helpful reminder: If you are creating a two-color print, you must specify the material color of the model and merge the models before completing the slicing.

IV. Start Printing
Start printing with Cura Connect
The Ultimaker S5 can print via Wi-Fi or the internet. When your Ultimaker S5 and computer are connected to the same network, you can do this using Cura Connect in Ultimaker Cura.
Start printing via Cura Connect:
1. Connect your Ultimaker S5 to the internet via Wi-Fi or Ethernet (if not already done):
2. Turn on Wi-Fi or Internet in the network menu.
3. In Ultimaker Cura, go to Settings > Printers > Manage Printers.
4. Click the button to connect via the internet.

5. Select your Ultimaker from the displayed list of printers, and then click Connect. This printer is now the group host.
6. Slice your 3D model in Ultimaker Cura.
7. Click "Print via Internet" to start printing.
✔ Helpful reminder: Once printing begins, you can monitor it by opening the monitor tab at the top of the Ultimaker Cura screen or using the Ultimaker app.
This allows you to view the printing progress and control your Ultimaker S5 remotely.
✔ Helpful reminder: When sending multiple print jobs, Cura Connect will automatically add them to the print pair column.

Print with USB
Even when printing via the network is not possible, 3D printed files can still be transferred to your Ultimaker S5 via USB.
1. Plug the USB into the computer.
2. Slice your 3D model in Ultimaker Cura. Ensure that the material, print nozzle, and print platform settings in Ultimaker Cura match those on your Ultimaker S5.
3. Press the Save to Removable Storage button to save the printed file to USB (GCODE, GCODE.gz or UFP).
4. Then remove the USB from the Ultimaker Cura and take the USB out of the computer.
5. Insert the USB drive into the USB slot of the Ultimaker S5.
6. Go to the Status Overview menu and select the file you want to print.

5. Remove the printed items
Once the 3D print is complete, it must be removed from the print platform. There are several ways to do this, depending on the type of print platform (glass or aluminum).
⚠Please note: When using the (brim) edge tool, be aware of the risk of cutting yourself when removing the printed object from the print platform. After removing the object from the print platform, use the deburring tool to remove the edge.
If you are printing directly onto the platform without using adhesive, simply allow the printing platform and the printed item to cool after printing. The material will shrink as it cools, allowing you to easily remove the printed item from the printing platform.
If your printed object remains stuck to the printing platen after cooling, you can use a scraper to remove it. Place the scraper under the printed object, parallel to the printing platen to avoid scratching it. Apply some pressure to remove the object. A scraper can also be used to carefully remove any remaining print from the printing platen, such as edges or support structures.

⚠Please note: Remove the print platform from the printer to avoid damaging the print platform fixture.
Water
If you are printing on a printing platform using glue and neither of the above methods works, please clean the printed object with water.
Remove the print platform from the printer. If the print platform is still hot, be careful not to burn yourself. Quickly cool the back of the platform with cool tap water. The printing material will shrink more than it would during normal cooling. Once cooled enough, the object will remove itself.
Alternatively, you can dissolve the glue in warm water on the printing surface of the platform. Once the glue is dissolved, it will be easier to remove. If using PVA, place the printing platform in water to dissolve the PVA, making the object easier to remove.

VI. Remove supporting materials
Dissolved PVA support
The PVA support structure can be removed by dissolving the PVA in water. This takes several hours and leaves no residue.
1. Immerse the object in water
When printed objects containing PVA are placed in water, the PVA will slowly dissolve. This process can be achieved by using:
Warm water . Warm water will shorten the dissolving time. When using PLA as a building material, ensure the water temperature does not exceed 35°C, otherwise parts of the PLA may deform. Never use water above 50°C, as this increases the risk of combustion.
Stir . Use flowing water with stirring to reduce dissolution time. Moving water can make PVA dissolve more quickly (in some cases, within three hours, depending on the amount of support material used).
Pliers . You can speed up the dissolution of PVA by immersing the print in water for about 10 minutes, then use pliers to remove most of the support. When the print is returned to the water, only the remaining PVA needs to be dissolved.
2. Rinse with clean water
After the PVA support has completely dissolved, rinse the printed objects with water to remove excess PVA.
3. Allow the item to dry.
If necessary, allow the printed objects to dry completely and perform additional post-treatment on the building materials.
4. Wastewater treatment
PVA is a biodegradable material, and in most cases, water treatment is easy. Rinse with hot water from the tap for about 30 seconds to remove any excess PVA-saturated water and avoid clogging problems.

Remove the separate support
When printing using Ultimaker Breakaway as the support material, post-processing is required to remove the support structure.
⚠Please note: It is recommended to wear protective gloves when the supporting structure contains sharp or large corners.
1. Tear apart the internal support structure . First, use diagonal pliers to remove the walls of the support structure. This allows you to quickly remove most of the internal support structure.

2. Pulling the Separate Supports from the Building Materials <br>After removing most of the support structure, the remaining parts can be pulled out of the building materials. Use pliers to grasp the separate support at the corner and carefully place it underneath, then bend it upwards. Repeat this process for several corners to loosen the supports around the corners of the model. Afterward, pull the Breakaway support out of the model.
3. Peel off the last traces from the model. <br>Sometimes, after pulling the support apart from the building materials, the last layer of support material may still be present. If this happens, use pliers to peel off its edges. Any remaining traces on the model can be removed using tweezers.

VII. Replace the wire and nozzle
Change materials
Materials can be easily changed on the Ultimaker S5 using the menu steps. In addition to changing materials, you can also choose to load or unload materials only. Before inserting materials, please ensure that a compatible print nozzle is installed.
1. Go to the settings menu, select the material you want to use, and then select Change.
2. Wait for the printing nozzle to heat up and unload the material.
3. Remove the material from the feeder and reel holder.
4. Place the new material on the roll holder.
5. Wait for Ultimaker S5 to test the materials.
6. Place the end of the material into the feeder and gently push it until the feeder clamps the wire and you can see the material in the feed tube.
7. Wait for the Ultimaker S5 to heat the print nozzles and load the material into the print head.
8. Confirm that new material is being extruded from the print nozzle.
9. Wait a moment for the nozzle to cool down.
✔ Reminder: When using third-party materials, you can manually select the material type.
Replace the print nozzle
The nozzles on the Ultimaker S5 can be easily changed using the steps in the menu. In addition to changing the print nozzles, you can also choose to load or unload the print nozzles.
1. Go to the settings menu, select the print nozzle you want to change, and then select Change.
2. Wait for the printing nozzle to heat up, unload the material, and then wait for it to cool down again.
3. Turn on the glass door and the printhead fan.
4. Squeeze the lever to slide the print nozzle out of the print head, and carefully remove the print nozzle.
5. Insert the print head by squeezing the print nozzle lever and sliding it into the print head slot until you hear a click.
6. Carefully close the printhead fan bracket.
7. Wait for the Ultimaker S5 to load the material into the nozzle.
⚠Please note: Do not touch the contact points on the back of the print nozzle with your fingers.
✔ Reminder: Make sure the print nozzle is completely vertical when removing or installing so that it can slide smoothly in/out of the print head.
✔ Reminder: The print nozzle may have a ring around it. Remove this nozzle ring before using the Ultimaker S5 print nozzle.
✔ Reminder: You cannot change the material and nozzle at the same time. If you want to change two materials at the same time, you must first unload the material, then change the print nozzle, and then load the new material.
Replace printing platform
When switching from a glass printing platform to an aluminum printing platform, or vice versa, the build settings in the printer must also be changed.
1. Go to the settings menu and select the print platform.
2. Change the print platform type to the print platform type placed in your Ultimaker S5 by selecting the Select type.

8. Printing Platform Calibration
When using the Ultimaker S5, perform a print platform calibration first to ensure effective adhesion between the printed object and the platform. If the distance between the nozzle and the print platform is too large, your printed object will not adhere properly to the glass platform. On the other hand, if the nozzle is close to the print platform, it can prevent material extrusion.
✔ Reminder: Ensure there is no excess material under the nozzle, and make sure the print platform is clean before starting to print or when calibrating the print platform; otherwise, inaccuracies may occur.
When active calibration printing begins, the printer automatically performs active calibration to establish a complete first layer. During active calibration, the Ultimaker S5 creates a detailed height map of the print platform surface. This information can be used to compensate for any inaccuracies in printing the first layer of the print platform. The platform height can be adjusted during printing.
⚠Caution: Do not touch the Ultimaker S5 during active calibration, as this may affect the calibration process.
Manual calibration can be performed when the horizontal distance of the printing platform is too far and active calibration is required.
1. Go to the main menu > Maintenance > Print Platform > Manual Calibration.
2. Wait for Ultimaker S5 to prepare for manual program adjustment.
3. Use the touchscreen to move the print platform until the distance between the first nozzle and the print platform is approximately 1 mm. Ensure the nozzle is close to the print platform without touching it.
4. Adjust the front right screw to roughly align it with the front build plate. There should be approximately 1 mm of clearance between the nozzle and the build plate. Confirm and continue.
5. Repeat step 4 for the screw on the front left and confirm.
6. Place the calibration card between the nozzle and the printing platform. Use the touch screen control to adjust the position of the printing platform until you feel some friction when moving the calibration card.
7. Place the calibration card between the nozzle and the printing platform on the front right. Adjust the screw until you feel some friction when moving the calibration card.
8. Repeat step 7 on the left front and confirm to continue.

After calibrating the print platform with the first nozzle, you need to align the second nozzle to ensure that the heights of both nozzles are set correctly. To do this, simply use a calibration card to set the correct height.
1. Place the calibration card between the second nozzle and the base. Use the controls to adjust the position of the print platform until you feel some resistance when moving the calibration card.
2. Wait for the printer to complete the manual adjustment procedure.
⚠Please note: When using the calibration card for fine-tuning, do not apply force to the printing platform, as this will cause inaccurate calibration.

IX. XY Offset Correction
In addition to the vertical offset, the horizontal distance between the nozzles in the X and Y directions also needs to be configured. While the print nozzles provided by the Ultimaker S5 are already calibrated, you will need to perform an XY offset calibration again when the printer detects a new combination. This calibration can only be performed once; afterwards, the message is stored on the printer. Proper XY calibration will ensure good alignment of the two colors or materials.
To perform the calibration, you will need an XY calibration table, which you can find in the accessory box or download:
glass platform
Aluminum plate platform
Before starting calibration, confirm that two print nozzles and material are installed and that the correct XY calibration table is selected.
Start calibration:
1. Go to the main menu > Maintenance > Print Head > XY Offset Correction and select Start Correction.
2. The Ultimaker S5 will print the grid pattern on the printing platform until completion.
3. After the Ultimaker S5 has cooled, remove the print platform from the printer and align it with the XY calibration table. Confirm that the printed grid is precisely positioned on top/bottom of the two rectangles on the paper.
✔ Helpful Reminder: If you are performing XY correction on a glass printing platform, you must place the glass printing platform on top of the paper XY correction table. For aluminum printing platforms, place the transparent XY correction table on top of the platform.
✔ Helpful Reminder: It's important to ensure the XY offset print is properly adhered to the print platform without any signs of under-extrusion. If this is the case, it's recommended to repeat the calibration print.

10. Lifting switch calibration
The switch bracket allows the second print nozzle to be raised and lowered. Successful dual printing depends heavily on proper nozzle switching. The power switch is factory-calibrated for the Ultimaker S5, but manual calibration is also possible if needed.
Perform switch calibration:

1. Go to the main menu > maintenance > print head > calibration lift switch and select start calibration.
2. Move the lift switch on the side of the print head toward you.
3. Move the print head so that the lift switch is installed in the switch bracket. Confirm completion.
4. Wait for the print head to return to its original position and test the lift switch.
5. Does the lift switch lower and raise the print nozzle? If yes, press OK to complete the calibration. If not, select No to perform the calibration again.
