[3D Printing News] Summer 3D Printing Tutorial Adventure

Teaching never stops, pioneer Christopher Sweeney wrote last summer about his 3D printing teaching adventure.
Last summer, I had the opportunity to teach 3D printing in three different locations in the Philadelphia Tri-State area and join local maker spaces.
I have two young students, a faculty member and a graduate student, in Pennsylvania and Delaware.
Although these were just my jobs this summer, they were very beneficial and a great learning experience.

For me, the printers I've tested and the courses I offer here are enough to help different people develop their skills, and I'm excited to see people's creativity.
My first stop was a course at Bucks County Community School called Kids on Campus, where students could create rockets, robots, and many other amazing adventures while working with music.
I started a Makers Slam course focusing on 3D printing, while also working on projects like MakeyMakeys and Chibitronics, drawing on conductive paper using conductive pens. My camp members had the opportunity to use the software and several Ultimakers to create high-quality prints. They also learned how to use Tinkercad and Morphi, including all of Morphi's drawing options, and they had the opportunity to use some special filaments like...

Camp members have ample time to learn 3D printing.





The second adventure was quite different; I worked with K-8 students who were teaching graduate students and educators who wanted to learn more about 3D printing.
This 3D printing course is offered by the Professional Association of Educators at the Philadelphia College of the Arts. It is also held during Art Week, a week-long celebration featuring guest speakers, field trips, and exhibitions of all students' final work. In this course, we focus on developing skills...
The models were created using TurtleArt, Morphi, Tinkercad, and Chimera, with the goal of enabling these educators to impart the knowledge they have learned to their students.

ProtoPasta created a unique design using unusual wirework. The post-processing results were stunning, showcasing everything they learned and created during this intense week-long project, working alongside other students.






When I was teaching at an art college, I also had the opportunity to join Hacktory, a local maker space in West Philadelphia. All my graduate and continuing education students use Ultimakers, and I had the opportunity to use Hacktory’s Ultimaker 2, a completely new upgrade with a secure shell, from printing to finishing.
Here, I can not only work on my own 3D printing design, but also have the opportunity to try laser cutting, add other new elements, and complete the project I've been working on, which will give my Charter High School architecture and design students simple circuits and Drawdio shells in September.
My final stop on my summer tour was the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art, where I was invited to participate in my Maker SLAM and a local Christian youth summer camp.
Here, we have the opportunity to create personal items using Tinkercad and some unusual threads, allowing participants to dress up in fashionable clothing and use them continuously.

We used the Cooper Hewitt Design Challenge format to have my own students create and design on CHAD. This experience was very worthwhile and fun, according to the Director of Education.

As I said, there was a lot of work this summer, and it was a great adventure. I hope to hold the same conference this year and bring more exciting 3D printing projects to students this summer.
