[3D Printing News] Ultimaker Cura: Advanced Tips


Each new version of Ultimaker Cura adds more features based on user needs. If you are already an advanced Cura user, this tutorial may inspire some unexpected Ultimaker Cura features and help solve insurmountable problems in printing.
Use the "Recommended Mode" in Ultimaker Cura , which contains preset parameter values ​​for direct 3D printing ; "Complete Control Freak" users can also adjust all settings in "Custom Mode," enjoying more than 300 personalized adjustments.

Let's take a look at some commonly used settings in custom mode, as well as some new features recently added to Ultimaker Cloud:

Network synchronization

Ultimaker 3 or Ultimaker S5 printers connected via network cable or cloud can automatically synchronize materials and print settings. If multiple Ultimaker printers are connected in series, you can select the material that best suits your needs without having to perform extensive resetting of a single printer or material.

Custom support

Place or remove supports in the required areas. Use the support displacement cube to place supports in the specified areas, and double-click to delete the support material in that area.

Print path

Preview your print path in preview mode to confirm that the printing process meets your needs, and adjust the slice settings as needed.

Hiding Z-axis gap

If you are preparing a concept model for display and have certain requirements for its appearance, hiding the Z-axis seam is very important. The Z-axis seam is the starting point of each horizontal layer when printing the next layer of 3D . As the printing height gradually moves, this originally inconspicuous seam will create an imperfect line on the stacked 3D printed product. By placing the starting point at the sharp corner of the model or inside the model, the Z-axis seam can be hidden.

Progressive fill

Water-soluble PVA filament offers groundbreaking benefits for FDM 3D printing technology, but it is not the lowest-cost filament. Progressive infill reduces the density of the bottom support material of the model and gradually increases it around the model's requirements, thus streamlining the cost of PVA ; in addition, this also reduces the time required for 3D printing .

Support Interface

Another more effective technique for using support materials is to use support interfaces. In two-part printing, regular PLA can still be used as the support material for other parts, while PVA is only used at the contact surface between the 3D object and the support material. This can further reduce printing costs and PVA melting time.

Back up your preferences and settings files to Ultimaker Cloud so you can save your settings and backups anytime, anywhere. It's compatible with all operating systems, such as copying settings backed up on a Linux system to a Windows computer.


Remote printing
