[3D Printing Example] A Complete Record of the Development Process! Mini Home Ozone Generator!

With the increasing application of 3D printers in Taiwanese enterprises, following our previous visit to the "Fifth Brother's Poison Cave," we were honored to receive an invitation from our client to interview them about the development process of their new product, "Fried Germ Elf"! Xetin Company, based in Taiwan, specializes in the research and development and manufacturing of ozone generators and currently holds multiple US invention patents. These products are used in water purification systems, restaurants, hotels, and industrial environments for mold removal and sterilization. Their "Senyang Series" is exported to Europe, America, Canada, Japan, and other countries.

Challenging new business opportunities

Given Taiwan's hot and humid climate, consumers have increasingly prioritized home environmental quality in recent years, in addition to large industrial products. Therefore, Xetin began developing a personalized home ozone generator – the Ozone Genie. The early development process involved drawing three-view diagrams and roughly cutting out the solid shape using EK board (industrial foam material) for model making. After continuous revisions and adjustments, CNC machining and mold testing were conducted until the final version entered mass production.

However, CNC mold making is expensive, and the material and size errors between the prototype and the actual product need to be adjusted back and forth, and repeated mold making consumes too much cost; this made them start to try using 3D printers as development tools, and finally chose Ultimaker .

Prototype Elimination Tournament

With the Ultimaker 3D printer , experimenting with new designs became a crucial process. The "Fried Mushroom Elf" underwent three design tests before becoming the final version for the market. The person in charge emphasized, "Previously, due to the limitations of mold-making costs, only one of the four structures could be selected for prototype testing; now, I can print out each one for actual use and then choose the best effect to provide to consumers."

Unlike other products, "solid printing" was the most unique requirement during this development process. In typical 3D printing prototypes, the internal structure is mostly shaped using partial infill; however, Xetin decided to use 100% infill for testing to ensure the authenticity of the product's materials and weight. This choice was more than sufficient due to the significant reduction in development time provided by Ultimaker and the affordable price of PLA filaments.

"Using the Ultimaker 3D printer , we can have 100% control over the mold," the person in charge said. In order to meet the mini size of the home ozone generator, everything from the battery casing and pad structure to the charging base had to be designed by the 3D printer to meet the internal requirements of the machine.

Real-world testing

The home-use ozone generator "Fried Germ Elf" can effectively remove mold, sterilize, and eliminate odors in a safe manner. The prototype being tested on-site is identical to the final mass-produced "Fried Germ Elf" except that it is made using 3D printing . It is a ready-to-use product, and you can even feel the change in the smell of air particles after turning it on.

The XTB-360 Explosive Fungus Genie is Born

After continuously improving the product prototype through 3D printing , the Air Sterilizer XTB-360 was successfully launched. Besides its compact size of 8cm x 8cm x 16cm, meeting various needs for home and automotive use, it has also passed SGS testing and certification, achieving an air sterilization rate of 99.9%. By saving time on mold making and back-and-forth communication, communication and actual testing can be conducted directly within the company; Ultimaker 2 Extended has made the development process of the "Air Sterilizer" more possible, providing consumers with the best product.
