[3D Printing News] Packaging production lines can be freely interchanged; the secrets of digital factories revealed!
Gerhard Schubert GmbH is a pioneer in Top-Loading Machine (TLM) technology, having developed and innovated it for over 50 years, combining robotic arms, intelligent control, and modular systems. Founded in 1966, its second-generation company, headquartered in Germany, now employs over 1,300 people and is further driving new developments in digital manufacturing and digital warehousing by incorporating 3D printing technology.

The company's packaging machines are used in a wide range of applications, from food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics to technology products, packaging them with various boxes, pallets, cartons, or transparent bags. Well-known international brands such as Ferrero, Nestlé, Unilever, and Roche all use Schubert's automation equipment.

Customized accessories at the end of the machine are a high-value service. These customized accessories allow packaging machines to flexibly switch between different production lines; for example, a machine that packages Easter bunny chocolates can also package Christmas chocolates of different shapes. When customers have new requirements, they send them to Schubert, who then develops suitable accessories and programs.
( 3D printing tools allow a single device to process different products simultaneously)
To address these needs, Schubert began incorporating 3D printing technology, offering greater design freedom beyond traditional manufacturing methods. For example, a tool composed of over 200 parts can be completed in a single 3D print , reducing weight and assembly time. 3D printing also allows for faster part remanufacturing; the lead time for each tool improvement has been reduced from weeks in traditional manufacturing to hours, significantly saving development costs.

Digital Warehousing
Although 3D printed parts are very convenient to use, transporting finished products to various locations is too time-consuming for production lines where every second counts. They have adopted a case-by-case 3D printing project: as long as each location is equipped with an Ultimaker 3D printer , it can be printed and manufactured internally as needed.
(Customers can easily choose new tools for 3D printing through digital warehousing.)
When customers need new tools or specific parts, they can browse the online 3D printing library in the in-house digital warehouse and print the parts accordingly. This is not only a convenient service for customers, but also significantly reduces delivery time and manpower requirements. More importantly, they no longer need additional storage space to stock a range of spare parts.

In addition to sharing these resources with clients, we also have a unique encryption system, GS.Gate, for network security to prevent clients' development projects from being leaked.
Because this project involves customers 3D printing their own parts, a certain quality standard must be maintained to ensure customer satisfaction with the finished product. Each tool includes complete settings and parameters from engineers, rather than just a single 3D drawing. To make the project work, they chose the Ultimaker3D printer , which is easy to operate, produces stable prints, and offers high quality.
Except for special parts that cannot be 3D printed at present (e.g., special materials that require 3D printing of filaments ) and other methods such as CNC , laser processing , etc. as auxiliary manufacturing, all of Schubert's 3D printing databases were developed and tested specifically for the Ultimaker 3D printer . These digital files have all undergone the company's internal quality certification, and customers only need to select and 3D print them .
The new generation of digital manufacturing is transforming the industry. Choosing the right tools can significantly improve productivity and efficiency, and save more costs.
