After 35 years of rapid development, 3D printing has saturated the market with various solutions. For beginners, determining which technology is most suitable can be difficult, so purchasing decisions are usually based on two factors: availability and price. Most beginners choose between FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) and SLA (Stereolithography), which are the most common and affordable 3D printing technologies. In contrast, SLS (Laser Sintering) seems less affordable and more expensive, deterring 3D printing novices. But is this really the case?
SLS technology uses laser light to fuse powder materials. The powder is spread and fills the entire 3D printing space inside the machine, eliminating the need for support materials and allowing the mechanical structure to be printed as a single piece. Because the object is molten and polymerized rather than glued, as long as it is cleaned properly, the finished product will not shed powder or disintegrate during use. SLS laser powder sintering is relatively difficult to operate and expensive, but it has the best mechanical and functional prototype applications, a matte surface, does not require support, and the finished product is relatively strong and durable.
Each of the three technologies has its own advantages, disadvantages, and characteristics. With proper design and operation, the desired results can be achieved.
