Transformation opportunity

Using new technologies to manufacture new technologies has always been a major challenge for industrial transformation. In the past, production line accessories were designed and manufactured by outsourced manufacturers. This not only resulted in a lack of "know-how" in the technology, making it difficult to solidify professional skills, but also took more than a month to include production time, communication, and negotiation. The practicality of the samples could not fully meet the needs and was limited in many ways.

(After designing the required tools directly using the in-house 3D printer , modifications and testing can be performed immediately, significantly reducing waiting time.)


Independent innovation helps engineering units accumulate design experience, realize internal development and production, and eliminates concerns about technology leakage. From design ideas to 3D printing , it only takes one week to complete and provide actual production line testing, with an average cost of only 1/40 of outsourced production.

(With successful experience, internal parts and outer casings of mechanisms, in addition to the fixtures, can also be readjusted or repaired as needed.)

Small-batch, high-variety production, quick line changeover

Taking the panel product TPC-1251T in the video as an example, the main production process consists of three workstations: assembly, testing, and packaging. In order to meet the demand for small-batch and diverse products, the production line must adopt a highly flexible and fast-change operation mode while maintaining the stability of production speed and quality.

Enabling operators to use appropriate auxiliary tools becomes key to systematic production, further driving the demand for independent development and manufacturing. "The introduction of the Ultimaker 3D printer is to enable fixture design and development to 'co-work' directly with production line units, quickly and directly meeting the production line's usage needs through collaborative efforts," emphasized Lin Hongyu, Senior Engineer at Advantech.

Advantech maintains strict quality control over its shipments and has a cleanroom for cleaning its products.
Emerging models

To date, Ultimaker 3D printers have produced over 300 fixtures for them, saving approximately 1,500 days of outsourcing time and over NT$2.5 million in costs. The greatest value lies in enabling effective cross-departmental communication and testing through immediate tools, and helping the entire production line quickly complete various products.

(Tools designed for individual products using 3D printers can accelerate standardized workflows; 3D printing fixtures are required for all three workstations: testing, production, and packaging.)


"After introducing 3D printers , we can directly visit the production line to see the actual products and communicate and modify them according to requirements to meet production line needs," emphasized Zhu Jianyu, a process engineer at Advantech. In addition to existing production processes, 3D printing tools are also used for new product development and the introduction of new designs.
