[3D Printing Tutorial] Exporting STL files with Fusion 360: Simple steps and multiple options!

Fusion 360 is an easy-to-use digital modeling and design (CAD) and manufacturing (CAM) software, a great choice for complex 2D and 3D design and manufacturing or rapid prototyping, and it also offers students a three-year free trial. Whether for professional modeling or personal interest, Fusion 360 is well-suited for use. One important feature is the ability to export 3D models as STL files for slicing before 3D printing . Below are several methods for exporting 3D models as STL files in Fusion 360, allowing you to choose according to your needs for exporting components or solids, or multiple elements, making your workflow faster.

(a) Export the complete design

To export the entire design (including all entities and components), the most direct method is to select the menu on the left, right-click the object name at the top, and then select "Save As STL" from the drop-down list. A small panel will appear, allowing you to choose whether to send the file directly to 3D printing and slicing software such as Cura, Meshmixer, or PreForm.

(ii) Exporting a single component or main body

To export a single component or main body, right-click the component or main body name, and then select "Save As STL" from the drop-down menu. This will open the same layout as in "Method 1" above, but you can directly export a single component. Alternatively, you can directly select the " 3D Print " function in the "Make" option of the top toolbar, and you can also select the object you want to export.

(iii) Exporting multiple entities as independent STL files

To export multiple entities as separate STL files, you can create a group. First, select "New Group" under the "Create" tool in the toolbar. A small panel will appear. Then, select one or more entities, making sure to switch the "From Bodies" option to select only one entity, and then press "OK".

After creating the group, it will be displayed at the bottom right. Then add each additional entity to this group. Finally, right-click the group, select "Save As STL File", and select "One File" in the "Structure" panel.

(iv) Converting other 3D software files

The above methods offer faster conversion speeds for complex objects.
