3D printers are creating new business opportunities! " Club 5 - Wu Ge's Den " in Taiwan started by selling realistic remote control car models. The model cars they represent are not only realistic in appearance, but also have very sophisticated climbing and off-road performance, making them high-end toys for adults.
It was an honor for Sandima to visit their headquarters and learn about their successful experience in developing and selling products both domestically and internationally using the Ultimaker 3D printer in recent years!
The company has a test track for rock climbing vehicles, and it is meticulous in both realistic landscaping and climbing difficulty; the entire exhibition area is filled with various car models and shells, presenting a rugged industrial style, and is more like a collection space for crazy hobbyists.
"When you see it, you want to modify it." The founder expressed the sentiments of many "big boys," and everything started from this passion. Initially, the interest in modification was the starting point, and the creativity in the process was realized through 3D printers to meet the needs of modification parts, while injecting new design elements. The emergence of 3D printers brought new opportunities for product development.
After starting to use the Ultimaker 3D printer , their self-developed various modification parts were successively sold to overseas markets, with exquisite details that made them irresistible. From the interior to the exterior, the products emphasize accuracy, and from various car models to different years, they strive to be as realistic as possible in every aspect.
"Since we had enough freedom and time in the early stages of development, the main difficulties lay in mold costs and prototype replacement," the design manager mentioned. Besides the high mold costs, design and development were also the most challenging aspects. As a valuable auxiliary tool, the 3D printer needed to operate smoothly. After reviewing various evaluations and user recommendations, the Ultimaker 3D printer, known for its stable printing and high quality, was chosen.
In its early days, " Club 5 " primarily acted as an agent for imported models sold in Taiwan. With the addition of 3D printers , they were able to develop and produce their own parts, gradually expanding into the market for custom parts and even selling them overseas. Today, these custom parts account for 50% of their total revenue, compared to simply selling model cars.
To date, after introducing their first Ultimaker 3D printer , they now have one Ultimaker 2+ and four Ultimaker 3 printers , which they are using very efficiently. The dual-head system of the Ultimaker 3 is used during product development and design phases, simplifying post-processing support. Once the design is finalized, the Ultimaker 2+ is used for mass production; this approach allows production and development processes to operate smoothly simultaneously.
Not only appearance and styling, but also vehicle performance are within their scope of modification. They also need to understand the internal structure of the vehicle. Therefore, these 3D printers are also used to develop, for example, vehicle body counterweight parts or functional modification parts for the interior of the vehicle.
Finally, we also interviewed them about their desired improvements to the 3D printer's features and services. The design manager stated, "The existing features meet our needs, and we hope to increase the print volume beyond that of the Ultimaker 3 in the future." With five Ultimaker machines , the Ultimaker S5 's print volume perfectly matches their size requirements. (Further reading: Ultimaker S5 Large Size Test Successfully Achieved! )
