[3D Printing and Casting] Metal Parts: A Comprehensive Collection of 3D Printing and Casting!

After the takeoff of 3D printing technology, in addition to FDM , SLS , and SLA technologies, metal 3D printing technology is also under development, as seen in previous exhibitions (further reading: 2018 Formnext Exhibition Special Correspondent, 3 Major Innovative Technologies to Show You! ); due to the fact that the technology is not yet widespread, the current price of metal 3D printers often starts at millions or tens of millions.
Beyond this price, the currently popular 3D printing technology, after a brief conversion process, can provide high-quality metal parts. Below, we'll take you through Sandima's large family of 3D printed casting parts, from small to large items!

SLA Curing : Jewelry and Metalworking Series

We previously shared several metal castings shown in the photos, which were printed using DWS XFAB resin. After the original parts were printed, they were melted down to create metal molds.

SLA (Silicon Lamination ) technology is characterized by smooth surfaces and delicate details, making it suitable for small, complex, and finely textured jewelry.

Especially for customized or custom-made products, there is no need to use expensive milling machines or mold making costs; you can see the hair of the person and the texture of the petals in the picture. We directly used our hands as a scale to take the picture.

FDM ( Fused Deposition Modeling) for Industrial Parts and Portrait Series

Most people are familiar with FDM (Fiber Direct Molding) technology , which uses filament for 3D printing . Using the newly released PolyCast filament specifically designed for casting to create prototypes allows for the rapid production of clean, fully melted cavities for replicating metal parts. In addition to melting, the casting-specific PolyCast can also be polished with alcohol; it creates a smooth surface before casting and prevents the accumulation marks typical of 3D printing , making it the best choice for prototyping.

You can refer to the previous finished bicycle parts and the final metal samples of aircraft components. The process from 3D printing to metal parts usually involves four steps: 3D printing prototype, alcohol polishing, casting prototype, and metal polishing, to obtain the most perfect metal finished product.

Unlike CNC milling, 3D printing uses an additive molding method, allowing it to create structures or internal curves that are impossible to produce directly with milling. Combining these two technologies also yields more refined finished products. Compared to photopolymerization, FDM is more cost-effective and can print larger objects; for example, the 3D-printed 1:1 brake caliper we demonstrated has a total size of approximately 25.5mm x 16.5mm x 78.5mm, and it's possible to print even larger parts.

In addition to these samples, we can also take a look at the application cases of the foreign metal mold making company Sylatech using this technology for lost-wax casting; the picture shows the final product used for metal propeller forming.
