There are many ways to apply 3D printing technology, but most of them are used in the early sampling of product models. This time, 3DMart is honored to receive a 3D printing commission from Daoxiangwu to use the Ultimaker3 3D printer to print a model of rice husk chopsticks.

Daoxiangwu is a company specializing in the research, development, manufacturing, and distribution of rice husk-related products. Its products feature natural colors, simplicity, safety, and environmental friendliness in their tableware.

Original Design Intent

Because most commercially available chopsticks are made from materials obtained through deforestation of forests and bamboo groves, causing significant damage to the earth. Furthermore, the relatively large pores in the fibers of chopsticks also contribute to their poor quality.
Bacteria can easily grow and mold can form. Long-term use of slightly moldy tableware can pose a health risk.

Therefore, drawing on the concept that rice is the staple food of East Asians, we chose rice husks—the residue after rice milling—as the main material for our products. Our R&D team discovered that rice husks are high in ferulic acid, a component that effectively inhibits bacteria and prevents mold. Recycling them to make chopsticks is not only environmentally friendly but also creates a sense of vitality. This provides consumers with safe and reliable eco-friendly tableware.

Design Process


Chopsticks may seem simple, but there are many details to consider. Whether the overall grip is comfortable, whether food will easily slip when picking them up, and the overall aesthetics of the chopsticks are all essential factors to consider.
Each piece of tableware requires a custom mold, with mold costs ranging from hundreds of thousands to millions of yuan. However, we opted to use 3D printing to create samples for evaluation first.
This can save a lot of time and money.
The chopsticks samples printed using the Ultimaker3 3D printer not only have small error values ​​and excellent texture, but also allow us to avoid the huge costs of modifications after mold making.

The rice husk chopsticks sample, printed using the Ultimaker3 3D printer, maintains the highest quality model using PLA and PVA filaments.
The printed chopsticks have almost zero tolerance and can be used for actual testing.

The top part can be detached and used as a chopstick rest. The rice husk tableware was completed through continuous experimentation and production by the R&D team, and each piece of tableware must pass inspection after completion before it can be released to the market.
