[3D Printing Application] Bring classic scenes to life! 3D Animation Printer!

As children, we often remember classic scenes from cartoons like Popeye and Dragon Ball. This time, we'll use a 3D printer to create our own rotating animation, recreating the classic Lion King! Below are diagrams and instructions, guiding you step-by-step. Hakuna Matata!

First, we used the Ultimaker 3D printer to print out the various parts of the animation machine. For this project, we used PLA with water-soluble support PVA , which, after dissolution, achieves precise dimensions and a clean surface.



Remember to adjust the precision of your 3D printer , because the animation frame is assembled using a pin-and-pin method; if it is too tight, it will not be able to assemble, and if it is too loose, it will not be able to hold the image structure and will not be able to rotate. Therefore, the size must be printed very precisely.



Creating the visuals

Next, let's understand the principle of animation. It uses progressively moving motion to create a continuous sequence of images. One second of animation typically requires 24 frames to achieve smooth movement. This rotating animation machine has 30 slots on the side, so it can repeat animation for a little over one second. Since the animation machine uses vertically connected images, taking the sequence 1, 2, 3 as an example, the images need to be cut vertically when laying them out. If that's still difficult, simply follow the concept of "top half of the next page + bottom half of the previous page" for the last image! Before printing, remember to arrange the images according to the instructions in the image below for a successful print!





The best part is choosing a favorite animation! This time, we chose the classic animation: The Lion King. We took a one-second clip and broke it down into 30 still frames. After arranging them as shown above, we printed them out, folded them in half, glued them together, and then inserted toothpicks.



Once assembled, it will move.

Following the assembly diagram, simply insert both ends of the toothpick into the holes at both ends of the rotator and connect them to complete the process! Although there are many steps, it is very rewarding to finish, especially when you see the screen move – it's truly moving!
