[3D Scanning] SHINING 3D FreeScan Combo+ Unboxing Review: Compact yet Powerful
There is no doubt that 3D scanning is no longer a niche technology.
Major tech companies like Nvidia and Apple are incorporating this technology into an increasing number of consumer products.
The field of professional 3D scanning also continues to evolve, with manufacturers like SHINING 3D driving innovation and cost-performance improvements in this market.

Unboxing
The FreeScan Combo+ and its accessories come in a highly durable storage case, and I was very impressed by its high quality.
While sturdy, the case itself is relatively compact and can fit into a larger backpack, making it ideal for on-site scanning tasks.
Everything from the overall design to the locking mechanism feels premium and robust.

It isn't just about the exterior; the storage case features an IP67 rating, ensuring full dust protection and protection against temporary submersion.
The storage space inside the case is also designed with great attention to detail.
It is easy to remove and store the scanner and its accessories.

Setup
Getting started with the FreeScan Combo+ software is very straightforward; you can launch it simply by inserting the USB dongle into your PC.
However, since it uses one USB port, you will need at least three USB ports if you want to connect the scanner, the USB dongle, and a mouse simultaneously.

Setting up the scanner itself is also easy. Just connect it to your computer and power source, launch the software, and perform the calibration using the included calibration board.
The calibration process itself is very quick, taking less than 5 minutes.

Selecting Scanning Modes
When starting a scan, the first thing to choose is between laser mode and non-laser mode.
You cannot mix these two technologies within a single project.
Therefore, it is important to select the appropriate mode to obtain the most accurate and efficient results.

If the object has a complex shape or challenging surface textures, such as reflective or light-absorbing surfaces, laser mode is the best choice.

On the other hand, non-laser scanning does not require markers, making it suitable for human subjects or objects where high detail reproduction is not critical, allowing for quick scans.
Depending on the chosen alignment method, the scanner's workflow is divided into two types.

Scanning with Marker Alignment in Laser Mode
When using marker-based alignment, separate project files are required for each side of the object being scanned.
In other words, when scanning an object from multiple angles, you need to create a separate project for each perspective.
Once all sides have been scanned, you align the respective projects to finish with a single, integrated 3D model.
Although this adds a few steps, it ensures a higher level of precision for the final model.
Also, for the best results, I recommend trimming incomplete scan areas.

Scanning with Geometric Alignment in Non-Laser Scanning Mode
Using geometric alignment simplifies the process of scanning multiple sides of an object.
You just pause the scan, rotate the object, and resume scanning.
However, geometric alignment mode can sometimes struggle with flat surfaces or planar objects.
While you might think these simple shapes are perfect for non-laser scanning, accurate alignment can be difficult because the system may have trouble recognizing distinct features.

Usability
The scanning operation in laser mode was extremely smooth.
Even a beginner can perform basic scans with just about 10 minutes of practice.
With 26-line, 7-line, and single-line modes available, it is a versatile tool capable of meeting the needs of various projects.
In laser mode, you can adjust the brightness quickly and easily.
The 26-line mode is excellent for data acquisition over a wide area, while the 7-line and single-line modes allow for capturing high-quality details.
The deep-hole scanning mode is also a very useful feature, allowing you to erase data in specific areas and re-scan for higher quality.

Software
The alignment module of the FreeScan Combo+ software worked exceptionally well.
In most cases, the software's automatic alignment feature worked perfectly, and manual intervention was not required.
On rare occasions, I needed to use the marker-based alignment function, but this was also efficient, requiring me to set only 3–4 points manually, which was completed in seconds.
During alignment, each part is grouped by project and aligned with each other.
Every time you update the scan results, the system takes the characteristics of those results into account to process the data in alignment with subsequent updates.
The more projects you align, the better the accuracy of the automatic alignment!
The FreeScan Combo+ software includes a complete suite of powerful post-processing tools that allow for easy optimization of scan data. From deleting unwanted details to "hole filling" in meshes, a wide range of processing is possible.

Summary
Scanning with the FreeScan Combo+ consistently yielded good results, and I was very impressed by its scan speed and ease of use.
Most scans were completed within 30 minutes, and it is capable of handling advanced applications such as reverse engineering and quality control.
The FreeScan Combo+ features two types of scanning technologies and four different modes, making it a versatile tool that can handle a variety of objects and environments.
Its compact size and lightweight design are also major advantages, making it ideal for long scanning sessions or on-site work.
The software's usability and calibration process are very user-friendly, allowing even beginners to perform advanced tasks immediately.
The FreeScan Combo+ is a product that lives up to expectations of precision, versatility, and compactness.
It offers excellent cost-performance, providing industrial-level performance at a competitive price.
