[3D Scanning] Unboxing the SHINING 3D EinStar VEGA: Scanning as Easy as a Handheld Game Console
The handheld 3D scanner market is developing rapidly, and SHINING 3D continues to innovate with its Einstar series.
Founded in 2004, SHINING 3D is a major player in the 3D scanning field, with highly regarded expertise in industrial metrology and digital dentistry.
The company has expanded its product lineup with the announcement of the Einstar Vega handheld 3D scanner.
Vega targets the relatively new market for standalone, portable scanners with touchscreens. It is clearly designed with inspiration from the smartphones and cameras we use daily.
Unboxing the Einstar Vega
The Einstar Vega comes in a relatively compact box containing a carrying case. The case is secured by protective foam within the box.
Opening the box reveals the Einstar Vega unit itself along with helpful accessories: a protective silicone cover, a 65W charger with dual USB-C outputs, a USB-C cable, two sets of adhesive markers, a calibration board, a wrist strap, and a small figurine for test scanning.

Opening the box reveals the Einstar Vega unit itself along with helpful accessories: a protective silicone cover, a 65W charger with dual USB-C outputs, a USB-C cable, two sets of adhesive markers, a calibration board, a wrist strap, and a small figurine for test scanning.

The unit is compact and lightweight, measuring 180 x 95 x 26.5 mm and weighing just 535 g. While the materials and grip feel robust, the design is ergonomic and easy to handle.
Its appearance is like a cross between a smartphone and a compact camera.
The actual operating feel and interface are also reminiscent of a handheld gaming console.

The Einstar Vega features a 6.4-inch touchscreen covering the entire back, with an interface that reminds one of a modern smartphone.
On the left side, there is a USB-C port for charging and data transfer.
On the bottom, there is a tripod screw hole and ventilation ports.
The front houses a multi-sensor scanning system protected by a glass panel. It is equipped with two types of 3D scanning technologies:

MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems): Used in HD mode, this sensor uses mechanical micromirrors to guide laser light at high speed, acquiring high-precision 3D data.
Because it can capture fine shapes and subtle textures, it is suitable for small, complex objects.
VCSEL Sensor (Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser): Used in Fast mode, it projects patterns of structured light onto the object.
It generates 3D models by capturing the distortion of the patterns. It excels in speed and adaptability, making it particularly effective for large objects and various lighting conditions.
By combining these two technologies, it captures small objects in detail and large objects quickly, balancing both precision and efficiency.
Calibrating the Einstar Vega
You can start using it immediately after powering it on for the first time.
However, we recommend calibrating it for the best results.
Simply have the included calibration board ready and start the calibration procedure on the unit.
The Einstar Vega user interface uses the 6.4-inch touchscreen, and with its intuitive screens and smooth, responsive menu navigation, it is easy for even beginners to use.
You can calibrate the MEMS and VCSEL sensors with the included board by following the clear animations displayed on the Vega screen. This procedure ensures optimal accuracy across various surfaces and lighting conditions.

The Einstar Vega is more than just a scanner. It contains a full-fledged computer equipped with a 2.4GHz 8-core processor, 32GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD.
This allows you to process scan data directly on the device, greatly expanding the flexibility of how you use it.
Furthermore, it is equipped with a 48MP camera to capture detailed texture information and a 5000mAh internal battery, allowing it to operate independently without being constantly connected to a power source.
User Experience
The VEGA's all-in-one system combines two types of 3D scanning technologies.
HD mode is suitable for small objects requiring precise detail capture. Fast mode is designed to quickly acquire the shape of large objects.
The EINSTAR VEGA offers wireless scanning and an ergonomic design, weighing only 535 g.
Being able to operate without a laptop or high-performance PC is particularly convenient.

The 5000mAh battery, large screen, wireless connectivity, and powerful processor make this a scanner well-suited for portable use.
It makes working in workshops, outdoors, and other places where using a computer is difficult or impractical much easier.
In our tests, the battery lasted for about 1.5 hours. If necessary, you can supplement the internal battery with an external power bank.

Powerful hardware such as the 6.4-inch AMOLED display and 48MP camera complements the built-in storage and processing power.
SHINING 3D Cloud supports data storage and collaboration.
Overall, it features an intuitive operation screen, allowing for quick and easy mode switching and calibration.
Basically, you can complete the entire scan workflow on the EINSTAR VEGA, including deleting unnecessary scan results and meshing.
While waiting for processing, various helpful scanning tips are displayed on the screen.
Because of this, the entire scanning process with the EINSTAR VEGA feels as casual and fun as a portable game.

You can load scan data onto a PC using the associated "StarVision" software. Our tests showed it captured rich detail down to fine structures, with accuracy within the 0.1 mm range.
It also supports alignment of multiple scans and mesh generation, with output in common formats such as OBJ, STL, and PLY.

Conclusion
The EINSTAR Vega is a high-performance mobile 3D scanner. Its all-in-one functionality is particularly appealing to users who need flexible workflows, such as capturing automotive parts on-site.
Combining ease of use, good scan quality, and the ability to edit directly on the device, it is an attractive option for many 3D scanning applications and is also suitable for complementing 3D printing.
Since it lacks a one-shot function, you need to keep your hand steady during continuous scanning. However, as it still provided better image acquisition than other scanners we have tried, I did not feel this was a drawback.
Overall, the Vega provides an impressive user experience.
