【360° Scan】Matterport Usage: Multi-story Buildings & 5 Alignment Tips!
Even department stores can be scanned! Take your 360° scanning to the next level. This guide provides a detailed explanation of how to scan multi-story buildings, tips for aligning stairs, and the scanning order. Following our previous user guide for beginners of Matterport Pro2 (click here), we will continue to introduce not only basic usage but also more detailed operation procedures. Master these five tips for scanning multi-story buildings with a Matterport Pro2 360° scanner, and you'll be able to easily scan large facilities like department stores!



I. Multi-Story Stairs, Scan Order
1. Scan floors from bottom to top
2. The distance the scanner moves upwards should be <30cm (approx. 5 steps)
・Each scan position should be within sight of the previous scan position.
・It is recommended to scan every other stair.
・When scanning spiral staircases, it is recommended to scan every step to ensure accurate alignment.

3. After scanning the stairs, select the "Select Floor" icon.
(Important: To accurately align and connect between floors, always ensure that the "last scan point" of the "previous floor" is at the "top" of the stairs when adding a new floor.)



4. Add a new floor.




5. Enter the name and start scanning.
(Important: For stairs going from the 1st floor to the 2nd floor, the 360° scan area belongs to the 1st floor. The same logic applies to subsequent floors.)

II. Scan by returning to a floor
1. In the preview screen, select the scan point (blue circle) you want to move.
2. Select "Move to Floor".


3. Select the floor to move the scan point to.




III. Edit Floors
1. In the preview screen, select the "Select Floor" icon.
2. Select the edit button on the displayed screen.



3. Delete a floor: Select the red circle next to the name.
4. Change floor order: Click and drag the three lines on the right.

IV. Floor Alignment
Matterport scan alignment technology aligns each scan point with the previous one, overlaying 2D and 3D data within the Matterport Capture software and aligning based on areas with high similarity.



1. 6 tips for accurate alignment
・Mark windows and mirrors immediately after scanning.
If not marked, Matterport may interpret reflections in mirrors as separate rooms, leading to alignment discrepancies.
・Keep doors consistently open or closed.
・Shorten the distance between scans.
・Avoid direct sunlight and outdoor scanning.
・Each scan position should be within sight of the previous scan position.
・Start scanning a new floor immediately near the last scan point of the previous floor.

2. Alignment Errors
If the Matterport Capture system cannot correctly align scan data, an "alignment error" message will be displayed.





Try reducing the distance to the scan point completed in the previous step by half, then continue scanning. If it still doesn't align correctly, delete the previous scan point and scan that position again. Repeat this deletion and rescan process until alignment returns to normal.


3. Misalignments
Misalignments are different from "alignment errors." This refers to a state where Matterport Capture believes it has correctly aligned the space, but the actual scan results show incorrect connections. (For example, if scan point 7 is displayed between scan points 5 and 6 in the software, but the 7th scan point is actually at the position of the orange circle, then scan point 7 is misaligned.)







Spatial misalignments accumulate, and too many misalignments can lead to problems with the display of subsequent scan paths. It is recommended to zoom in on the screen after each scan to check for misaligned scan points.


V. Correcting Misalignment
1. Delete misaligned scan points.
Find and delete the misaligned scan point, then go back to the midpoint between the two immediately preceding scan points and scan again. If corrected successfully, you can continue scanning.





2. Delete the previous two scan points.
If the first method doesn't fix it, delete the two previous scan points and scan again at the location of the last scan point. As shown in the figure, if scan point 10 is causing the misalignment, delete scan points 10 and 9, and scan again at the location of scan point 8.

3. Halve the scanning distance.
Reduce the scanning distance to half of the normal distance, or lower the tripod and scan until it aligns correctly again. (Important: Don't forget to hide unnecessary scan points in Workshop before completing the work.)
