Challenges : From Prototyping Bottlenecks to Innovation Flexibility

Innoseal Europe BV is a leader in developing and manufacturing tape-related packaging solutions, and it faces a common challenge in product development: balancing quality, delivery time, and cost from design to production.

Initially, the company used FDM 3D printing for testing and prototyping. While this brought some benefits in the early stages, it was soon discovered that the quality of the final parts was insufficient for functional testing or small-scale production .

Traditionally, Innoseal had to wait for significant market demand before adopting expensive injection molding—a process requiring substantial upfront investment and with uncertain outcomes. To mitigate risk, they began outsourcing 3D printing, but inconsistent lead times and concerns about intellectual property leakage hampered innovation .

Solution : Choose Lisa X and SLS Freedom

In search of an affordable, easy-to-use, open-materials SLS 3D printing ecosystem , the Innoseal team explored available technologies. Their evaluation led them to... Sinterit Lisa X .

"We researched other 3D printing methods and brands, but ultimately chose SLS, and specifically Sinterit, because of their smooth communication and wide range of open material options. This is something we couldn't find at other affordable entry-level SLS printer suppliers," recalls Daniel Aarts, Technical Director at Innoseal Europe .

We made this decision after visiting the Sinterit factory in Poland. "Seeing the production process firsthand and talking with the team gave us confidence in the product and the people behind it."

Applications : Functional components, prototypes, and small-batch production

Today, Innoseal primarily uses Lisa X to produce small functional parts made of PA11 CF , for prototyping and low-volume production until the output reaches a level suitable for transitioning to injection molding. Lisa X prints an average of 1-2 times per month, with batches ranging from 10 to 50 parts, and has become the cornerstone of their R&D and low-volume production.

"With SLS printers being used at such a large scale, calculating direct ROI is meaningless. However, the possibilities for innovation and testing new concepts have become much easier. Now, running rapid tests or improving existing designs takes only a few days instead of weeks," said Daniel Aarts.

The complete Sinterit ecosystem, including powder handling stations (PHS) and sandblasting machines , simplifies post-processing. Despite the complex geometries of Innoseal's parts (often with small holes and internal chambers), post-processing is highly efficient. "We are very satisfied with the surface quality of CF nylon, which is inherently quite rough," said Daniel Aarts.

1. Custom sizes for tape roll holders
2. Paper guide block
3. Pulleys, background push blocks, and one-way locks

Parts printed using the Sinterit LISA X printer:

1. Attach the belt pulley to the auxiliary pulley assembly.
2. The "pulley", "push rod", and "one-way lock" are assembled together.
3. Paper clamping mechanism with automatic release function

Impact : Accelerates innovation, reduces risk, and saves costs.

The implementation of Lisa X has already yielded measurable benefits:

  • Rework of new molds can be reduced by verifying parts before mold production .
  • Improve flexibility and time to market , especially for complex components.
  • Accelerate the design iteration cycle , saving 3-5 days for each design revision.

"This may not sound like much, but after multiple revisions, it can save a lot of time," explained Daniel Aarts, Technical Director at Innoseal Europe. "If we had to wait for outsourced milling or turning after each change, we would have lost more than 18 weeks in the past year."

Perhaps most importantly, Lisa X has authorized Innoseal to conduct bolder experiments . "We can now try some 'crazy' ideas that were previously unthinkable due to budget constraints. If the print volume is high enough and the refresh rate is sufficient, why not print them out and give them a try?"

Favorite feature: Worry-free printing

Daniel emphasizes that the ability to start printing and leave is one of the most valuable features of the Lisa X. Unlike FDM, where adhesion issues can ruin long print runs, the Lisa X offers reliability and peace of mind .

There's no need to wait for the first layer of print to adhere properly before printing. Prints won't be damaged even after 48 hours. This alone saves us countless hours and avoids unnecessary trouble.
