The X2D offers exceptionally smooth printing, and I was particularly impressed by the ease of support setup using two different materials, as well as its performance with minimal purging and waste.
With the newly installed filament guide switch and filter system on the back of the unit, along with a high-hardness nozzle, it has evolved into a true professional-grade engineering printer. It is an outstanding machine, worthy of being the rightful successor to the renowned "X1C."

Unboxing the X2D

The first impression upon unboxing the X2D is that its appearance and texture are as if the "H2D" has been directly scaled down. In fact, this model follows the design language of recent Bambu Lab machines, featuring a full metal frame, a matte dark coating, and sealed glass panels. It is undoubtedly a high-end model and a clear successor to the X1C.

While the overall design of the X2D inherits the lineage of the H2 series, its more compact body size allows for more effective use of workspace. It can be considered a more practical choice for many work environments.

Looking at the back of the machine, you notice the unique design of this printer. It is equipped with a fan, an additional extruder, and a filament switcher. While it appears simple at first glance, it exudes Bambu Lab's exceptional craftsmanship throughout.

Accessing the interior and examining the toolhead in detail reveals that this is not merely a scaled-down H2D. The X2D's dual nozzle system differs significantly from the H2D's layout; the left main nozzle employs a direct-drive extruder, while the right auxiliary nozzle is supplied with filament from a Bowden-style extruder mounted on the rear panel. From a mechanical perspective, this is a very clever design. It keeps the toolhead lightweight and achieves perfect nozzle switching without requiring additional motors, relying solely on mechanical gears and a trigger mechanism.

The X2D is essentially an engineering-grade machine, and two key features prove this.

The first is a **three-layer air filtration system** consisting of a G3 pre-filter, an H12 HEPA high-performance air filter, and a coconut shell activated carbon filter. ⚠️ Note on build size during dual-material printing:
When printing using two nozzles simultaneously, the build area is reduced to 235.5 x 256 mm. Additionally, it's important to note that the printable height is reduced by 4 mm when using the auxiliary hotend. When the right nozzle descends, the baffle moves beneath the left hotend, effectively reducing the clearance. While this won't be an issue for most prints, it should be considered when printing tall models in dual-material mode.

During the actual printing process, the X2D's nozzle switching is incredibly fast. As one nozzle ascends, the other descends simultaneously, with both nozzles functioning in parallel. This behavior is very similar to the H2 series, which also features dual nozzles. Since its introduction, the greatest strength of Bambu Lab printers has been their "accessibility," and this remains true for this latest model. Almost all operations are fully automatic. Loading filament into the AMS is extremely smooth. Similarly, the procedure for setting an auxiliary filament on an external spool and feeding it into the printing mechanism is designed to be very simple.

For engineers and product design studios, another noteworthy feature is the **hybrid extruder solution**. Despite its mid-sized enclosure, it achieves a lightweight print head by adopting a direct-drive extruder. The left direct-drive nozzle is suitable for special and soft materials like TPU, while the right nozzle is supplied from a Bowden-style extruder located outside the machine, allowing it to handle a wider variety of standard materials. Furthermore, when printing with dual materials, support removal becomes extremely easy, resulting in a much cleaner and more beautiful finish compared to single-nozzle printing where supports are generated from the same material as the main body.

Another feature that dramatically improves print quality when using special materials like engineering plastics is the "Dual Mode Thermal System." This system includes a **Cool Drive mode** which allows external fresh air intake when printing PLA and PETG. This eliminates the need to open vents or leave the door ajar, ensuring clean and sharp bridges and overhangs. On the other hand, selecting **Thermal mode** allows the print chamber to be heated up to 65°C, and the nozzle temperature can reach up to 300°C. This minimizes warping and ensures excellent layer adhesion when printing materials prone to shrinkage, such as ABS, ASA, and Nylon.

Furthermore, before each print begins, the machine performs a series of automatic self-checks and tests. These monitoring processes continue throughout the print, for instance, the **active flow calibration function** monitors the extruder motor, hotend, nozzle, and filament status in real-time, automatically compensating for wear and humidity. The longer the machine is used, the more evident the value of this feature becomes. For busy print farms operating 24/7, this significantly reduces the effort required for monitoring and fine-tuning.

5-inch Large Touchscreen Interface

As with previous Bambu Lab products, this machine features a large 5-inch (1280 x 720) touchscreen panel. The basic interface configuration is similar to the UI of H-series printers, allowing for intuitive navigation and settings updates. Bambu Lab has consistently strived to simplify the user interface, successfully creating a system that provides quick and direct access to all necessary functions.

Another subtle but welcome feature of the X2D is the enhanced chamber lighting. This is a great help in studios or workshops with limited natural light. However, in most situations, the 1920 x 1080 resolution live streaming camera clearly shows the status and progress of the print on the bed.

Should You Get the X2D?

In conclusion, there is no doubt that the Bambu Lab X2D is the most comprehensive mid-range FDM printer on the market today. It offers excellent value for money for many professional users, allowing them to achieve industry-leading, top-tier print quality at a price point that just one or two years ago would have only purchased an entry-level high-end model.
