Want to know how to win one of Taiwan's most prestigious 3D model sculpting competitions? This article will introduce Phrozen and discuss the creative process of the gold medalist who won the 3D category gold medal at the 11th RF Taiwan International Model Open !
If you're a true resin model enthusiast, you've probably heard of RF Exhibitions.
As one of Taiwan's most extensive and comprehensive annual resin sculpture exhibitions, it not only showcases some of the most complex and stunning works from around the world but also hosts a highly competitive 3D sculpture competition . This year, we are fortunate to witness the rise of an extraordinary talent: AX Digital Art , also known as Alex .
Although relatively new to the industry, this up-and-coming Taiwanese designer is undoubtedly passionate about 3D modeling. His models, "Bobby Worm" and "Water Bear," won first place in the 3D category at the 11th RF Pioneer Cup Prototype Competition in 2023!

Phrozen contacted Alex to learn more about his passion and how he won the competition with less than 3 years of 3D modeling experience.
Encounter: 3D Modeling and 3D Printing
Phrozen CEO Ray Wu once said that he created his own 3D printer brand because what was available on the market was too unattainable. Similarly, many 3D printing enthusiasts begin their journey simply because they can't find what they want on the market, and Alex is no exception.
He began his journey into 3D modeling and sculpture with Garage Kit models (GK models), quickly realizing the sheer amount of detail in each model was simply astounding. Monitor models like the P1S caught his eye with their detail and quality, but none truly suited his style. Moreover, they were far more expensive than his budget allowed. Therefore, when he first considered the possibilities of a 4K 3D printer, a whole new world opened up before him.
Two and a half years ago, Alex embarked on his journey into the world of 3D model sculpting, quickly developing a strong interest in horror and creature themes. Despite his relatively short time in the field, Alex has already demonstrated exceptional skills and a natural understanding of digital sculpting (primarily using ZBrush). His commitment to continuous learning and exchanging ideas has made him a well-known figure among Taiwanese designers.
Alex draws inspiration from soul games and horror zombie movies, summarizing his style as dark, grotesque, and terrifying. He cites the example of the film *The Thing*, saying that while some might find it uncomfortable, he personally finds the film's depictions of the human body impressive.
Besides movies and games, he is also a big fan of Japanese figure sculptors and designers, such as Takayuki Takeya and Keita Okada.

The astonishing and captivating detail in his models fuels his RF exhibition journey. His award-winning Bobbit Worm and Water Bear are highly regarded for their intricate realism and dynamic poses. The Bobbit Worm perfectly captures the sinister nature of this underwater predator, while the Water Bear is renowned for its tenacious vitality. The level of detail not only showcases Alex's technical skill but also demonstrates his ability to evoke emotions through his models.

One of the biggest challenges Alex faced in this project was ensuring the accuracy of the anatomy, especially the realistic distribution of muscles and bones. He addressed this issue through in-depth research, resulting in a lifelike level of precision in his work. This meticulous approach was particularly important for his entry, as the judging criteria included not only creativity but also technical precision.
If you look closely at the 196 hands displayed in his award-winning model, you'll find that each hand is unique. Although the 3D sculpting software is very advanced and can easily reproduce these hands through the mirror function, Alex still mentioned that the sculpted hands looked too stiff and did not meet his preferences, so in the end he adjusted all the hand models one by one himself.
It was a tedious job, but now everyone thinks it's worth the effort.
Alex's thoughts on Phrozen and PIXUP
When it comes to 3D printers, Alex is currently an avid user of the Sonic Mighty 8K . He loves the perfect balance between size, resolution, and cost-effectiveness. He had previously tried the Sonic Mega 8K as well.
He also tried PIXUP and was very enthusiastic about the Phrozen Verified model service. He recalled that he had previously spent a lot of money learning how to add proper support to his 3D printed models. However, the Phrozen Verified service ensured that all models were professionally checked by experts to guarantee a high printing success rate and reduce the risk of failure, and it was also affordable.
Alex then uploaded his models to the PIXUP website, selling them to any 3D printing enthusiast who wanted anatomically accurate human figures. Even better, you can now view and download Alex's award-winning Bobbit Worm and Water Bear models on PIXUP!
