[3D Printing Application] Trendy 3D Printed Shoes

There are many applications of 3D printing. For example, companies use 3D printing technology when developing product prototypes, and some schools also use 3D printers to help produce teaching materials or realize students' design ideas.
This time, 3DMart received a 3D printing commission from industrial design students at a university to help them realize their design concepts. They all happen to design shoes, each with their own unique characteristics. In this article, we will introduce their design process to you.

The first yellow women's shoe design is Li's work, mainly created for her graduation project. The design combines the shapes of tree roots, bone density, and a network of blood vessels, resulting in a very elegant and novel women's shoe design, targeting fashionable young women aged 25-35.

Li explained that 3D printing technology was used to complete the shoe design because the shoe model was very complex in shape and required a high degree of detail. Therefore, 3D printing was chosen as the preferred manufacturing process.
3D printing is relatively simple and the final result is very high.


Because the design has many openwork parts, the Ultimaker3 dual-nozzle 3D printer must be used to combine PLA with water-soluble PVA support material. There is no need to worry about endless supports or the rough surface after the supports are removed.
In Cura's settings, we minimized the amount of PVA used to avoid material waste and save soaking time. The total printing time was approximately 2 days.

The decision to design shoes as my graduation project came from my teacher's suggestion, since shoe design was a major project during my time at the United University's Department of Industrial Design.
Later, the focus shifted to product design, and this time there's a desire to revisit the original intention and challenge the strengths of past shoe design.



The second black unisex shoe design is Wang's creation. He drew inspiration from architectural structures, combining the varied shapes of bridges with a design that blends density and openness to create a unique shoe product with an architectural feel. The target audience is individuals aged 20-40, ranging from young to middle-aged people who pursue fashion trends, have individuality, and prefer a unisex style.


The purpose of designing this shoe is to make flexible use of the derivative design software I have recently learned in this assignment, to create a unique and fashionable shoe with an architectural structure.
Using derivative design software to create files, you can create a wide variety of different shapes and styles by simply adjusting a few values.
Because of the complex design of this product, it is difficult to manufacture by hand. 3D printing can perfectly print the accurate proportions, achieve the required level of detail, and eliminate any error.

Because the shoes have many open and perforated designs, water-soluble PVA support must be used during printing to avoid troublesome post-processing.
As can be seen from the picture, this shoe uses a lot of PVA, almost covering the entire shoe, which is why it took up to 8 days to print.

The ability to maintain high quality even during such long printing periods, and importantly, to avoid problems during the printing process, is what makes the Ultimaker series of 3D printers so remarkable.



The third item is a 3D-printed roller skate designed by Lu, which combines functionality and aesthetics. She felt that the roller skates on the market were limited by their functionality, resulting in a monotonous appearance. Therefore, she wanted to design a pair of roller skates that were both streamlined and aesthetically pleasing.

The target customer group for the product is young people who are interested in ice skating, and the skates are customizable.

This project attempts to utilize the most popular technology available today – 3D printing – to explore the possibilities of 3D printing shoes, and employs 3D drawing software.

The design of components with many irregular holes is difficult to achieve using other manufacturing methods, but 3D printing can easily and quickly generate the required models. It can not only quickly customize objects, but also produce unique models; compared to virtual 3D renderings, it allows for a more intuitive understanding of the size and shortcomings of physical objects.

During the production process, it is important to pay attention to the position of the supports, as this may affect the appearance of the model, and the choice of materials will also affect the subsequent painting and coloring.

These objects were printed using the Ultimaker 3 extended 3D printer (in multiple pieces), all made of TPE material with PLA support material, and the thin sheet at the top can be bent freely and is flexible.

Although 3D printed shoes are not yet widely used in the market due to some limitations in materials, it is believed that the continuous improvement of 3D printers and the introduction of new materials will make 3D printed shoes more acceptable and desirable to the public.
