【3D Print Software】Firmware - Essential Knowledge for 3D Printing

3DMART |

Understanding Firmware

What is firmware? What is its role? In this article, we will explain how firmware works and how to update it on Ultimaker 3D printers in an easy-to-understand way. Let's get started!

What is Firmware?

To understand the difference between Ultimaker 2 and Ultimaker 3 firmware, you first need to know what firmware is. Simply put, it's a type of computer program, conceptually similar to Cura, Windows, Android, Microsoft Word, Chrome, iTunes, WhatsApp, and so on.

Unlike these, however, firmware is a highly specialized program. It's used to control the operation of a specific machine (in this case, a 3D printer). Firmware is stored inside the printer and controls the body, screen, lights, and even nozzle temperature during printing. Without firmware, an Ultimaker 3D printer would be largely non-functional.

Cura and Firmware

Cura and firmware are closely related but play very different roles. Cura takes the user's 3D model and converts it into instructions called G-code, which it then sends to the printer. The firmware then executes those instructions and performs the actual creation.

"CAD → 3D Model → Cura → G-code → [Send to 3D printer] → Firmware → Physical Object"

Ultimaker Original and Ultimaker 2

The Ultimaker Original and Ultimaker 2 are similar, featuring the same small controller and performing nearly identical roles. The Ultimaker 2's firmware is an improved version of the Original's, offering a better user experience.

These controllers have limited performance, with processing power roughly equivalent to the original Gameboy. They also lack features like Wi-Fi or internal storage.

● Limited connectivity (USB cable and SD card)
● No automatic update function
● No internal storage
● Limited functionality

Updating Firmware

Due to limited connectivity and no automatic update function, you need to update manually using a USB connection and Cura.

Ultimaker 3

The Ultimaker 3 features a more powerful controller, with performance closer to that of a modern smartphone. It supports Wi-Fi, wired LAN, USB, cameras, and more.

It also supports network connectivity, internal storage, web interfaces, and applications, making 3D printing more convenient.

Updating Ultimaker 3 Firmware

The Ultimaker 3 supports automatic firmware updates and can also be updated manually via network or USB.
