[3D Printing Application] XING Mobility - Electric Racing Cars

XING Mobility is a company specializing in the research and development and manufacturing of electric racing cars and supercars.
The sleek and stylish exterior and internal structure of a racing car require a long period of research and development and constant testing.

They used 3D printing technology to change the traditional workflow of the automotive industry and accelerate the speed of design and production.

Azizi, founder of Xingjing Technology, poses with an electric race car.

3D Printing Manufacturing and Support

The blue 3D-printed parts assembled on the car body are power supply protection covers, and the white 3D-printed parts are lightweight mounting brackets for the car body.

The design during the R&D phase will change constantly, so we choose to use 3D printing technology to quickly obtain samples. After the samples are tested, the design will be changed again, and this process will be repeated until the final product is designed. In the past, production by CNC (which takes at least 3 days) was not only time-consuming and expensive, but it usually takes one to two weeks.

With the adoption of 3D printing, printing can begin before the end of the workday, and engineers can receive the finished product and begin testing the next day. The overall R&D time has been reduced to only one-tenth of what it used to be (a 90% reduction in R&D time), and costs have also been significantly reduced.
Because of the need to consider overall strength, most parts of electric racing cars will eventually be replaced with CNC-machined finished products. However, some holders and connectors will still use 3D-printed parts, accounting for about 10% of the total.

Gray 3D printed parts serve as lightweight mounting brackets for the car body.  The black 3D printed part is a protective shell for the CAN BUS signal converter.

3D printing can now provide considerable assistance in manufacturing, but there are still a few unresolved issues, such as calculating the strength of the finished product, which was previously difficult to achieve in mold making or...
CNC-machined objects can have their strength information calculated using software, but the strength of 3D-printed objects is affected by other factors, such as material,
Reasons include directionality, fill rate, and shell thickness.

A small portion of the car's interior parts were directly made using 3D printed components.

Company's future goals

The operating environment of racing cars is the most demanding in the entire automotive industry. If the system we develop can be used in racing cars, it means that it can also be used in other automotive industries. In the future, we want to apply this system to motorcycles, buses, and other means of transportation, and even to sea or air transportation.

Advantages of 3D printing production
Using the Ultimaker 3D printer allows us to quickly create prototypes, tools, and final parts at a much lower cost than in the past.
3D printers can simplify the production process in the automotive industry and achieve greater efficiency.
