[3D Printing News] The Potential of Combining 3D Printing with the Global Automotive Industry

In the second half of 2017, Ultimaker was busy attending conferences and seminars, sharing stories of our customers’ success with 3D printing that could help others create better products and work more efficiently.
Our Senior Vice President of Product Management, Paul Heiden, travels the world delivering news about the significant time and cost savings that Ultimaker 3D printers can provide in small-scale production in commercial and manufacturing environments.
The best example is Volkswagen , which uses multiple Ultimaker 3D printers to streamline production time and reduce costs by manufacturing jigs, devices and other tools in local work areas. In this way, they reduced tool development time and costs by more than 90% .

The World Automobile Conference held in Istanbul from October 10 to 12, 2017

Paul's first stop was the World Motor Congress held at the Hilton Istanbul Bosphorus Hotel in Istanbul, Turkey.
More than 500 automotive market experts attended the event , which focused on "Industry 4.0" and the future trends of the automotive industry, fostering opportunities for interactive debate, thought leadership, and online exchange.

On October 11, Paul introduced the specific advantages of using 3D printing technology in small-scale production at the conference. Attendees were able to discover the advantages of 3D printing in automotive applications by visiting Ultimaker's booth. Experts demonstrated products and examined sample 3D printed end-use parts, such as 3D printing fixtures, devices and other tools.

The success of this event was made possible by the help of our partner 3Dortgen, which is responsible for the sales, installation and after-sales service of 3D printers, accessories and materials for Ultimaker throughout Turkey.

October 20-22, Shanghai SAMA 3D Printing Conference

The next stop is the 2nd Shanghai Lamination Manufacturers Association International Forum, held in Lingang Songjiang Science and Technology City, Shanghai.
SAMA is the leading 3D printing industry association in mainland China , and more than 800 attendees from around the world participated in this conference.
This event, organized in cooperation with the Consulate General in Shanghai, provided an opportunity for Dutch 3D printing companies to participate in this technical seminar.
And match them with interested potential customers or partners.


At the exhibition, Paul Heiden presented a Volkswagen case study at the industry forum. We also showcased Ultimaker's products and our business.
They also hosted a media event to announce Wenpoo 3D as their official service partner in mainland China.
