[ 3D Printing News] Using Ultimaker to build headphone prototypes and product testing

BOSEbuild, a division of Bose, is able to produce key prototype components for their BOSEbuild headphones. The in-house printers allow for extensive testing in the early design phase, reducing time between sample tests, saving money, and enabling the team to gather valuable data on product usability.

With Ultimaker, BOSEbuild can provide rapid prototyping and parts production for any project.

Time-saving design flexibility

"We needed a prototyping method that could quickly produce multiple parts, and our Ultimaker machine can easily handle printing in six different colors, allowing everyone on the team to actually test the design, functionality, and usability of the headphones," said Joe Titlow, Head of Sales and Marketing at BOSEbuild.

Initial difficulties

When working on the BOSEbuild headphones, the BOSEbuild design and engineering team needed to prototype the core, a crucial component of the headphones that attaches the earbuds to the headband. While they initially used internal BOSE prototyping to complete their main parts, they realized there was an urgent need for more than one core to facilitate further product testing. Furthermore, for the headphones to look and feel like the final product, every part had to fit together seamlessly.

Having two Ultimaker printers on hand provides greater flexibility in BOSEbuild's design projects; in the case of BOSEbuild headphones, they were able to produce accessories in various colors. This core flexibility allows the testing, hardware, and acoustics teams to pass evaluations one by one after testing, meaning early developers can move faster into prototyping and design approval processes. By saving time and money through Ultimaker, they can focus on the results, ensuring a perfect final product.

BOSEbuild can manufacture 3D printed parts for new products, saving money and increasing efficiency during the testing phase, bringing new progress to production. If you are also interested in our desktop 3D printers , please refer to our product page ; we also offer printing services .
