[3D Printing News] The ultimate combination: New composite filament X ultra-durable ruby ​​printhead!

Ultimaker is the world’s first 3D printer manufacturer to partner with leading materials companies, providing customers with a wider variety of materials while eliminating the hassle of using external products.



Ultimaker collaborates with leading materials companies such as Owens Corning and DSM to offer the perfect combination of high-performance composite materials. Setup files for Owens Corning XSTRAND™ and DSM Novamid® materials will also be available in Ultimaker Cura ; while the new abrasion-resistant printhead of the Ultimaker S5 ensures stable printing of composite materials.

Novel composite material – 3D printing printhead

To make composite materials easier to print, a new 3D printing printhead, CC Red 0.6, was also released.
Developed in collaboration with Anders Olsson, the 3D printing printhead features a precision-machined 0.6 mm diameter nozzle with a specially customized geometry. This printhead utilizes an ultra-durable ruby ​​cone, enabling stable 3D printing with composite materials. The package also includes four spare Ultimaker S5 nozzle caps for extended use.



Along with the profiles in Ultimaker Cura , this replaceable printhead will deliver perfect results on external materials, just as easily as using genuine Ultimaker materials. No need to manually set print parameters or worry about whether your printhead can withstand wear—the CC Red printhead is designed for lifetime durability in 3D printing.

Owens Corning XSTRAND™

Owens Corning, a global leader in glass fiber composites for 3D printing laboratories in France and the United States, has partnered with Ultimaker to develop the new Ultimaker S5 printing filament for XSTRAND™ GF30-PP and XSTRAND™ GF30-PA6 in response to customer demand.

The glass fiber material ensures more robust printing, has good chemical resistance and UV resistance, and can withstand high-temperature working environments.
Dr. Chris Skinner, Vice President of Strategic Marketing for Composites at Owens Corning, explained: "We decided to partner with Ultimaker because of the high performance and stability of the Ultimaker 3D printer , and will build the perfect settings for the Ultimaker Cura material."

DSM Novamid®

Engineering plastics specialist DSM is also developing filament for its Novamid® ID1030CF 10, a new polyamide for 3D printed parts with properties approaching those typically achievable only through injection molding. This material contains 10% carbon fiber, producing more robust, tougher, and harder 3D printed products, with printing speeds comparable to conventional plastic filaments; its high strength even makes it an ideal choice for demanding automotive parts or prototyping applications.

Hugo da Silva, Vice President of Additive Manufacturing at DSM, said, "By working with Ultimaker , we can provide simple, seamless solutions because their software and Ultimaker S5 are fully compatible with our materials, enabling the creation of higher-standard parts."



Ultimaker S5 fully upgraded
