[3D Printing Applications] Tapei Cycle's latest exhibit at 2018: Automatic Pinball Roller Coaster!

As kids, we all saw some toy tracks. Wanted one but didn't have pocket money? Now, with 3D printers , you can make anything you want, even custom-designed super-complex roller coaster tracks! What's needed based on this principle? The track itself, an ascending spiral shaft, a spiral shaft control panel, and an extra mystery guest—a slow motor. Let's first look at the result made manually:



How is this done? First, the file is put into Cura to analyze the track itself, which can automatically determine and generate support materials and calculate the printing time; the screen shows that the estimated printing time is about three days and the actual printing time is almost the same.



The all-new Cura 3.5 expands upon many new features, and our actual testing found it even more user-friendly. It not only supports devices other than Ultimaker , but also adds various materials and preference settings, and it's free! After three days of 3D printing, the roller coaster track is finally complete! This time, we used the Ultimaker 3 dual-nozzle 3D printer , employing a PLA main body with PVA support for printing. Once finished, simply immerse the track in water, and the PVA will automatically dissolve. This post-processing method, a favorite among lazy people, has already become a new favorite among our engineers, allowing you to gracefully finish your workday after prototyping, without rushing orders or chasing deadlines!



Dissolving the support material takes about a day, but using a tank air pump speeds it up even more! Doesn't it look just like aquascaping equipment in an aquarium?



After 3D printing the other parts, connect the control panel in the lower right corner of the diagram with the middle latch, and install the leftmost spiral shaft; the key control components are now complete.





The combined effect is very satisfying, and even the editor had a lot of fun playing with it. Thanks to Ultimaker 's printing quality, we even use 3D printing for the marbles. When you rotate the control disc, the marbles will keep running on the track!



Is it finished? Not satisfied, the engineers modified the motor themselves, allowing the pinball track to rotate indefinitely. A pinball roller coaster was one of the most coveted toys of our childhood; hurry and 3D print your own personalized one!
