[3D Printing Applications] Examples of 3D printing applications for metal materials!

The application concept, designed by Steve Cox of AMFORi, aims to demonstrate one of the many possible ways that metal FFF technology can improve existing processes.

Steve leveraged his experience working with partners across various industries to identify a valuable use case that capitalized on the unique advantages of metal printing on the UltiMaker printer.

challenge

The larger the surface area of a heat exchanger, the more efficient it is at transferring heat. Manufacturing compact, high-efficiency metal heat exchangers using conventional manufacturing techniques is a challenge.

The "green form" heat exchanger after 3D printing. It shrinks by approximately 20% during degreasing and sintering.

Solution

Additive manufacturing technology (FFF/FDM) can produce parts with novel internal geometries that are difficult or impossible to manufacture.

This concept component is a three-in-one compact single-piece heat exchanger designed for thermal management within the smallest possible form factor; its optimized internal geometry significantly improves efficiency compared to heat exchangers using conventional designs such as shell-and-tube or plate heat exchangers .

Only through metal 3D printing can such complex internal geometries be achieved, thereby maximizing the surface area.

The internal curved fin geometry of this component is designed to maximize the surface area of the model, thereby improving heat transfer capabilities. The part has virtually no overhangs, thus eliminating the need for structural support material.

Therefore, this component is both reliable and easy to print, and also easier to process in post-production. Because it is printed with metal, it can operate without problems at high temperatures.
