The student team "E-moto AGH" from AGH University of Technology in Krakow, Poland, participated in the "Smart Motorcycle Competition." In order to pass the strict evaluation of the competition, the students continuously tried to build high-performance electric off-road motorcycles.
The "Smart Motorcycle Competition" has been held for eight consecutive years, attracting production teams from different countries each year. Judges evaluate the functionality of each participating motorcycle using both static and dynamic methods. The static evaluation, in addition to including all project records, primarily tests the motorcycle's weight, rain resistance, lights, and brakes; the dynamic evaluation focuses on testing the motorcycle's speed and endurance!
The "E-moto AGH" team is constantly refining every part of the motorcycle by using carbon fiber molds, SLS (laser powder sintering), and FDM . Among them, the motorcycle's radiator has a honeycomb structure, and SLS technology has a wide range of applications, such as heat resistance, waterproofing, and structural complexity. Therefore, the radiator shell using SLS 3D printing is more suitable than the one using FDM wires in terms of durability and performance.
Furthermore, the 3D-printed air deflector is not only sturdy and durable, but also effectively prevents the radiator from being blocked or damaged by gravel, just like a custom-made product. "Considering that the maximum temperature of motorcycle coolant is 60 degrees Celsius, using high-temperature resistant PA12 powder is the most suitable!" the student said.
Desktop SLS 3D printers offer fast printing speeds, making them suitable for academic research or small-scale production. Meanwhile, automotive parts require precision, durability, and reliable technology, making SLS the preferred choice for many R&D teams, manufacturers, small businesses, and schools! The "E-moto AGH" team ultimately had two motorcycles pass all tests, and the students are actively developing new versions for next year's competition, aiming not only to promote the development of electric vehicles but also to create new technologies!
