[3D Printing] Beauty Accelerator! L'Oréal Hops on the 3D Printing Express!

3D printing —a technology that uses additive manufacturing to produce three-dimensional products—has seen rapid growth in recent years, but its origins are much older than you might think. As early as 1964, British futurist and science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke predicted that future "copiers" would be able to replicate any object.

This prediction finally came true in 1987 when 3D Systems released the SLA -1; now, with such advanced technology, its applications range from medical devices to fantastical art, what about cosmetics?

Thanks to the rise of social media, new beauty trends are emerging faster and more frequently than ever before, and consumers are eager to try and share new products. In just a few years, the beauty industry has struggled to keep up with rapidly changing demands and a highly competitive environment. However, thanks to 3D printing, which has significantly increased the speed of prototyping, L'Oréal is now faster than ever before.



Rapid launch of new products

The Ultimaker 3D printer allows L'Oréal to skip complex molding steps, significantly reducing the time needed to produce packaging prototypes through internal technology. More importantly, this innovation from concept to prototype has drastically shortened L'Oréal's time to market. In fact, before the 3D printing boom, it took up to 18 months for a product to go from development to launch; now, L'Oréal can test new designs in just one or two days!

Quantifying L'Oréal's process data reveals the significant impact of 3D printing on the design process. In 2017 alone, L'Oréal used 3D printing to create 14,000 packaging prototypes, both internally and in branch offices. This year, we increased the number of our in-house Ultimaker 3D printers from 11 to 27, so that our packaging teams in the US, China, Japan, India, and France can use them to create outstanding packaging prototypes. L'Oréal believes everyone should have access to amazing digital technology, so two of its Ultimaker 3D printers are also available to employees for personal use. Most importantly, all the design experts—from product designers and technical designers to prototyping developers and beauty specialists—work together in the digital packaging factory; here, they can bring concepts to the simulation stage in the blink of an eye.
