3D Printed Furniture That Can Be Assembled at Home
3D printing has expanded into many areas of life, and it is now making inroads into furniture design. Designer Jon Christie, featured in this article, utilizes 3D printing technology to create tables and chairs, achieving flexibility and modernity while reducing wasted time and cost.
A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity
Jon Christie is a craftsman who has been involved in furniture and lighting for over 20 years. In his latest innovative project, he explores how traditional furniture manufacturing and cutting-edge 3D printing technology can be fused.
His table and chair designs are a beautiful fusion of traditional craftsmanship and modern design. By utilizing 3D printing, he creates pieces that are flexible and stylish, yet also cost-effective.
The Scandinavian Approach
A visit to Denmark became an ideal starting point for Christie. Inspired by modern Nordic design, he began to experiment with his own designs, focusing particularly on the fusion of 3D printing and traditional furniture.
“I value furniture with high craftsmanship and natural materials that retain value over time,” he says. At the same time, he is very interested in how 3D printed joints can support furniture makers and create visually impactful pieces. This is a perfect fusion of old and new.
Mastering 3D Printing
Although Christie is an experienced traditional furniture maker, 3D printing was a completely new technology for him. “After numerous trials and much effort, I can now replace complex woodworking tasks with 3D printed joints,” he says.

After experimenting with various materials and mastering multiple CAD software programs, he found the optimal combination for furniture. The final design incorporates natural white nylon, creating a beautiful contrast with the wood.
Christie emphasizes that 3D printing complements existing technologies rather than replacing them. “I use 3D printing because it offers significant advantages to the design; otherwise, I would continue to use traditional manufacturing techniques.” He also believes that 3D printing facilitates large-scale customization, reduces resource waste, shortens production time, and lowers costs.
3D printed chairs and tables can be customized at low cost according to customer needs, including choices of wood and color. The same 3D printed components can be used for everything from large dining tables to standard tables.
Why 3D Printing?
3D printing significantly increases design freedom. Complex geometric shapes and sculptural designs can be achieved, and high-quality manufacturing can be done quickly.
“With a traditional chair, you would have to ship it assembled in a large box. However, with 3D printed joints, furniture can be disassembled for transport and easily assembled on-site.”
Furthermore, customization according to customer needs is possible at a low cost. Choices of color, size, and wood can also be freely made.

Towards a New Form of Furniture
Jon Christie's designs demonstrate the superiority of 3D printing in furniture design. They are excellent not only in innovation but also in practicality.
