[3D Printing News] Trendy Apparel Combining 3D Printing

For Jessica Joosse, a master's student in industrial design, the Fourth Industrial Revolution is simultaneously transforming into fashion and textiles.
The Ultimaker 3D printer is the perfect tool for embracing and exploring possibilities.
Jessica, a student at Eindhoven University of Technology, discovered that 3D printing technology can quickly transform design ideas into product value.
Her goal is to create fashionable products that allow consumers to connect more with designers.
As Jessica stated, "The Fourth Industrial Revolution will enable brands to create more personalized clothing using new manufacturing methods such as 3D printing and body scanning data."

The result is a mix of more traditional textile designs with 3D-printed fixtures, such as buttons or patterns, as well as complete 3D-printed accessories.

This process led me to research what kind of textiles could be used with which 3D printing jobs.
Then when I select one, it will be placed directly into the printing platform and secured with tape or clips.
To achieve the precision she needs, Jessica uses an augmented reality app to perfectly position the garment area for 3D printing on the printing platform . For larger designs, the textile can be moved and a new print completed in another area, overcoming the limitations of the 3D printer's build volume.

New design possibilities

Like all the best designs, Jessica uses 3D printing to achieve a combination of aesthetics and function.
The use of 3D printers to add patterns and final processing to clothing can also serve practical purposes, such as for belt loops and zippers.


These PLA buttons are printed directly onto the textile. The 3D-printed TPU accessories eliminate the need for stitching on this garment.

In addition to fabrics like cotton and denim, Jessica says 3D printing can also "integrate" designs into synthetic fabrics.
Using semi-flexible 3D printing materials (including TPU 95A and DSM's Arnitel) allows designs to bend to fit the shape of an object.
Combining these innovative methods and materials means Jessica can create designs that are impossible with other methods. "A single Ultimaker 3D printer can make anything I can imagine. A sewing machine alone is limited," Jessica says.

Jessica and her classmate Fabienne van der Weiden founded Labeledby, a company that provides services to fashion designers and brands, helping them innovate their production methods.
