I fell in love with programming when I was 13, shortly after my school became one of the first in the country to get computers. The machines were huge and slow, without even a screen—but they still fascinated me. My friends and I would spend hours writing and running programs. Computer science has changed my life, and I recently visited a high school that hopes to do the same for young people in New York.
The School of Software Engineering (AFSE), located in a Manhattan public high school, opened in 2012 and offers a fantastic curriculum that uses computer science concepts to prepare students for college. All students spend their first two years learning the fundamentals of computer science, and as teenagers, they choose to focus on either programming or front-end design. However, not every AFSE graduate becomes a programmer or software engineer, so they also need to complete a full range of non-major courses (such as English and social studies).
Unlike some vocational schools, there are no admission standards. New York City freshmen are selected and assigned to public schools through a random system. Any student can apply to AFSE, and their grades and perfect attendance are irrelevant to their chances of being selected, resulting in a very diverse student body from all over the city (although they are trying to get more girls to apply). 
I had the opportunity to attend a design course for senior students, where the teacher divided the students into groups and asked them to make a stand for headphones. Using modeling software and a 3D printer (pictured is Ultimaker 3 ), they had to design an interface that considered functionality, durability, and user-friendliness.
Each team took a different approach—some opted for clips to the edge of a table, others tried attaching them to a stand on the table; each design was thoughtfully crafted, which amazed me. (You can see some of their results in the video above.) 
The school’s unique curriculum is particularly beneficial for some students who are still struggling in secondary school. English learners and students with disabilities also thrive in AFSE because computer science focuses more on data than speaking skills. These students can even benefit from computer science concepts in non-major courses—for example, a history teacher might ask students to design a webpage about the War of 1812 instead of preparing an oral presentation. 
The school enrolls fewer than 500 students, resulting in small class sizes and more resources allocated to each student. Everyone receives a personalized graduation plan. Teachers can log into a shared platform to track student progress. When a student becomes a senior, the school uses the platform to identify, pinpoint gaps, and address any incomplete areas; it's used not only for AFSE (Academic and Social Sciences Assessment) but also for the network of a New York school called New Visions for Public Schools, whose data portal our foundation recently announced will help fund New Visions' efforts to expand. 
As freshmen, students are also assigned an advisor to help them adjust to high school and consider their plans after graduation. These advisors act as liaisons with their families and ensure that every student is taken care of. It's an impressive system that helps ensure no one is neglected; this individual attention is exactly what people think about when they talk about small high schools.
I think everyone can benefit from learning the fundamentals of computer science. It teaches you to think differently—how do you accomplish a task? Can you find a pattern? What kind of data do you need?—it's useful wherever you go; computer science has shaped my view of the world, and I hope the students I meet in the School of Software Engineering will do the same.
