To commemorate the 90th anniversary of Sir David Attenborough's birth, Timothy Hatton Architects created an intricate Christmas installation made entirely from 100% recycled 3D-printed parts.
This project not only highlights the importance of protecting our natural environment, but also demonstrates just how beautiful 3D printing can be.
About this project
Timothy Hatton Architects, one of London’s most prestigious architecture firms, created an intricate three-story Christmas installation at Aqua Shard restaurant to commemorate the 90th anniversary of Sir David Attenborough’s birth.
Using recycled materials, this 3D print highlights how we can reduce our impact on Earth's fragile ecosystems.
The project aims to raise funds for Fauna and Flora International, which will use the funds to save endangered habitats and species around the world.
Sir David Attenborough has been a member of the charity for nearly 60 years and is one of its most passionate advocates.
When we first investigated 3D printing, it was clear that the 3D printing industry was technologically disruptive and would put further pressure on the environment.
Finding environmentally friendly plastics is key to the success of 3D printing.
Art installation
This installation is located in the most eye-catching central spot of London's Aqua Shard. It features 3,000 intricate 3D-printed leaf veins depicting five threatened British trees, including the English oak, birch, and field maple.
This nine-meter-long installation, located three stories high inside the restaurant, emphasizes the beauty of the English countryside and the importance of preserving it.
It is worth noting that all installed 3D printed elements are made from 100% recycled plastic, sourced from household waste. If this household waste were not recycled,
Eventually, it will be buried.
Designed by Timothy Hatton Architects, each leaf will be sold, with all proceeds donated to charity.

3D printing and eco-responsibility
By using 3D printing in this way , Aqua Shard's guests can not only appreciate the art itself, but also create art using recycled materials.
Sir David Attenborough summarized his impressions of the project: “ Timothy Hatton’s installation at Aqua Shard captures the fragility of nature, finds beauty in diversity, and reflects on some of our behaviors and our often waste-producing society – especially at this time of year.”
I am also pleased that the proceeds from the installation will support the International Organization for the Study of Flora and Fauna, which works tirelessly to stem the tide of extinction and protect the biodiversity of our planet.
How is it manufactured?
Leaves are created using ObjectForm's "Mini Manufacturing Farm" with 16 Ultimaker 2 3D printers , working simultaneously to complete the installation on time.
Scott Knowles of ObjectForm explains: "When we first researched 3D printing, it was clear that the 3D printing industry was technologically disruptive and would place further pressure on the environment. Therefore, finding environmentally friendly plastics was key to supporting 3D printing. That's why we chose Ultimakers..."
