[3D Printing Application] DIY a 1-meter-tall Gundam model using SLA photopolymer 3D printing

We usually think of using UV-curing 3D printers for miniature and desktop models , but who says resin 3D printing can only make small models? A talented YouTuber from South Korea, God Finger, has boundless creativity. He simultaneously used four UV-curing printers to produce works that are both high-resolution and extremely large.

This YouTuber
is an office worker who enjoys making models. He's interested in everything he makes himself, including Gundam models, cars, airplanes, helicopters, and more.

Since receiving the Sonic Mega 8K, such a massive printer that can easily print more parts at once, his production speed has increased dramatically. Now, he has all the equipment and tools ready and is working on the assembly to complete his super-large 3D printed Gundam model.

Our own Phrozen 3D printing farm
As a devoted Phrozen user, God Finger has amassed a collection of Phrozen printers for his print farm. His collection has grown steadily over the years, and for the past five months he's been running all the printers non-stop, printing like crazy to complete the project.

The following are the Phrozen 3D printer and accessories he used in the UG Gundam project:
- Phrozen Sonic Mini 8K Resin 3D Printer
- Phrozen Sonic Mini 8K S Resin 3D Printer

Phrozen Sonic Mighty 8K Resin 3D Printer
- Phrozen Sonic Mega 8K Resin 3D Printer
- Phrozen Cleaning and Curing Kit

The printing process is never smooth sailing; sometimes printing fails or the printed product is unsuitable, which means that many fine-tuning and adjustments are needed even during the printing process.

What is admirable is that he used different resins on different parts and also had to track which parts should use which resin on which printer.

Assembly tips and tricks
Because the 3D-printed UG Gundam model he was using was very large, he needed to pay special attention to the assembly process. The heavier the model, the stronger the support needed between the joints.

Most of his models are assembled using magnets. When designing the models, he added special holes to them so that magnets and support rods could be easily glued on after printing, making it easy to connect them all together later.

To enhance the model's strength, he used a variety of reinforcing materials, including strong magnets of different sizes, brass rods, and even metal rods. As an added bonus, he even conducted a weight test, successfully hanging an eight-kilogram dumbbell on the model without any breakage or cracking. This is a testament to God Finger's meticulous work.

The entire assembly process was very satisfying, from the "click" of each magnet to seeing the model standing upright a meter high. This project definitely requires a strong heart, otherwise, don't even try it! (laughs)
