【Cura Software】Latest 5.0 beta: Automatic line width adjustment reduces print time by 20%


Reduce 3D printing time by up to 20%! Ultimaker Cura's latest 5.0 beta has developed a more powerful and practical system engine, allowing automatic adjustment of the line width of the filament extruded by the print head. This function, optimized according to model shape, fine details, and infill status, is a major advance in 3D printing technology! A free download link is provided at the end of the article.


In previous versions of Ultimaker Cura, the system used a fixed line width (the exact width determined by the nozzle diameter and the set line width). When slicing a file, if a 3D printed part only had two and a half line widths, Ultimaker Cura would automatically generate two lines, leaving a small gap in between. However, such a very small gap is smaller than one line width, making it difficult to fill and ultimately resulting in a small, noticeable gap between the two lines. In such cases, the system would generate diagonal lines to fill the gap.

When filling small gaps, the 3D print head would perform fine vibratory movements, resulting in a lot of unnecessary vibration and noise.


.Automatically varying line width

The updated Ultimaker Cura 5.0 Beta can dynamically adjust line width during 3D printing. When printing thin walls or complex details, it reduces gaps between lines, speeds up the print head's travel path, and simultaneously improves accuracy, resulting in more stable and higher-quality parts.

In the Cura slicer preview screen, compared to Ultimaker Cura 4.13 (left), Ultimaker Cura 5.0 Beta shows improved slicing results due to automatic line width adjustment.



The boat model below is sliced with a 0.1mm layer height and an AA 0.25mm nozzle. The gray parts of the boat show details too fine to be sliced further. As shown in the figure, a 20% scaled model can be sliced correctly, but if further reduced, some shapes cannot be 3D printed.

On the other hand, Ultimaker Cura 5.0 Beta can automatically adjust the line width, so even when scaled down to 15% or 10%, all paths can be sliced and 3D printed correctly.
