[Luban Software] Snapmaker Laser Engraving & 3D Printing: 11 Latest Features and Functions (Quick Summary)
In 2022, Snapmaker released Luban v4.4.0 for "3D Printing," followed by an update for "Laser Engraving" of v4.10.0 . These updates further enhanced the three-in-one functionality, making it even more powerful. We will introduce these updates in two main parts: 'Latest Features of 3D Printing' and 'Latest Features of Laser Engraving'! Free download links are provided at the end of this article.
New 3D printing features
1. A better user interface
The main toolbar includes tools for basic operations such as undo, align, group, ungroup, etc. It also provides four basic print preset parameters.

2. Provides more preset parameters
Snapmaker introduces a brand-new user interface, providing four basic printing parameters, while also allowing for custom parameter options, making it very user-friendly!

In version 4.4.0, up to 290 material and 3D printing parameters can be adjusted, compared to only about 50 in previous versions – this is a significant improvement! You can access these basic parameters and even have complete control over the printing process. A sample of adjustable parameters is provided below:
Speed control: fine-structure speed control, acceleration control, and jitter control.
Support structure : multi-density support, tree-like support, support preference.
Filling : Fractal filling, multi-density filling
Top and bottom: Ironing and smoothing mode
• Structural fine-tuning • Path optimization
The print settings management interface allows you to manage various print parameters, each with a detailed explanation.

Material Settings <br>Click on the toolbar in the upper right corner to enter the material selection. You'll see a clear and detailed material interface, ranging from basic to professional materials, including PVA , HIPS, Breakaway, and more. It also includes Nylon, which will be supported in the upcoming dual-printer 3D printing.

3D printing filaments have many different characteristics. Therefore, the new version allows you to input basic filament properties and set a parameter file for certain filaments. When using the same filament again, you can directly select the custom parameter configuration file.

3. Simulated print preview mode
The original fine line preview mode has been upgraded to a simulated print preview mode, making it look closer to the finished printed product.
Note: This feature may consume a significant amount of computer memory, especially for large models.
4. New canvas style
Snapmaker redesigned the Canvas layout, allowing for dynamic displays at different scales on the platform as the user zooms in or out. It even optimized the interaction during zooming and the panning process after zooming.

5. Model trimming and simplification
When designing models, trimming is often necessary to ensure a satisfactory final result. Now Luban can do this. Common problems with STL files, such as normals, holes, broken shells, intersecting triangles, etc., that appear when flipping, can all be detected by Luban, which will then provide suggestions for repair.
Building upon model repair, this version adds model simplification functionality. 3D models don't always have to be printed to precise dimensions. Luban allows you to customize the simplification rate or layer height, simplifying and customizing 3D models to suit your needs for both printing accuracy and efficiency. This feature makes it easy to create objects with low-polygon models.

6. Quick Preview Mode Before Slicing
This is currently a provisional feature under development, supporting only a few parameters. You can see a preliminary preview printed on the canvas without slicing.

Note: To use this feature, go to Settings → Performance → General and check the box to enable 3D Printing Live Preview.
7. Toolpath Optimization
Snapmaker optimizes the path for vector graphics processing, making the process smarter and more time-saving.

8. Supports 3MF and AMF file formats
In Luban 4.4.0, the 3D printing , laser cutting and engraving , and CNC functions support importing 3MF and AMF formats. When importing 3MF and AMF files containing multiple 3D print models, they are imported as a group and stacked in layers. STL files have always been a widely used format. However, the 3MF format can more effectively meet the needs of multi-color and multi-material printing. Try importing 3MF and AMF format 3D print models into Luban. Try now!
The latest features of laser engraving
This new version brings several important updates, focusing on optimizing image and graphic engraving. Through fine-tuning parameters, complex patterns and intricate designs can now be engraved more accurately, resulting in a more refined engraving experience.

9. Dot width compensation
Excessive burning during image engraving and cutting size deviations caused by laser dot offset have long been problems that have plagued many. But now, with configurable dot width compensation parameters, your machine can optimize the toolpath based on the size of the laser dot, reducing contour distortion and blurring .

10. Overscanning
If the working speed is set too high, the machine may not be able to reach the target speed during processing due to acceleration limitations. This could result in under-carving when the machine is operating in dynamic power mode.
To address this issue, the overscan ratio can now be adjusted in the line fill engraving mode to ensure the machine's actual operating speed is as close as possible to the target speed. Properly adjusting this parameter can not only correct insufficient engraving in the dynamic power mode mentioned above, but also resolve overburning in the constant power mode.
The basic principle of this mechanism is to add extra idle travel distance before the machine reaches the target speed. However, this also means sacrificing some machining travel distance, and if the overall travel distance exceeds the maximum working range, it may cause the machine to trigger its limit switch. Therefore, we recommend being more cautious when adjusting this parameter.

11. Scan Offset
In Snapmaker Luban V4.10.0, you can fine-tune parameters to compensate for bidirectional scan offset caused by mechanical feedback and high-speed overrun. This feature is particularly useful in line-fill engraving mode, and will be especially impressive when there is significant mechanical feedback or when the design to be engraved is highly detailed.
