A machine that integrates 3D printing, laser cutting, engraving, and CNC machining in one unit
Previous article: Following our Snapmaker Artisan Hands-on Review ― Laser Cutting and Engraving Features, this time we will introduce the final function of the Artisan: CNC machining! This article presents results based on hands-on testing by All3DP, Tom's Hardware, and Techradar Pro. This is the final article in the Artisan series.

As with previous Snapmaker models, the CNC mode is relatively easy for beginners to start using. CNC machining is one of the lesser-known features among the Artisan's three functions. While there are many products that can be compared to laser cutters and 3D printers, CNC might feel a bit more daunting. However, like the laser module, the CNC module can be securely locked into place. It is also possible to quickly swap the laser's quick-release baseplate for the CNC one.
After mounting the module, you need to perform calibration. This task is surprisingly simple and completed in just a few minutes. Once finished, you can lay out your design and begin processing. Using the tools embedded in Luban, you can design your creations with a similar feel to using the laser module. Once ready, you can configure the machine's operations from the touchscreen.
Putting the CNC Machining Function to the Test
Snapmaker's CNC functionality is easier to start using than expected. As you machine various shapes using wood and plastic, you will realize the creative possibilities are vast. However, the 200W output is slightly lacking. While it can process complex details, it would have been even better to handle heavier metals, even if only 3mm thin plates. Still, considering it is a 3-in-1 machine, the CNC feature is very impressive, and the usability of the Luban software is evident.

The Snapmaker Luban software is the core of the system, allowing you to operate each of the machine's modules and applications. Especially convenient is the unified interface across all functions. This makes it easy to learn how to operate even unfamiliar processing technologies. Another feature is the large 7-inch touchscreen mounted on the machine body. It adds to the ease of use by allowing you to easily adjust various settings, check progress, and make adjustments as needed.

Looking at CNC, this module is mainly used for machining wood, but it also supports engraving acrylic and soft stone. The list of compatible materials includes: Wood (walnut, beech, pine), high-density fiberboard, MDF, plywood, jade, carbon fiber, acrylic, epoxy tooling board, and PCB.
To use CNC mode, you need to swap the tool head and build plate. The Snapmaker Artisan comes with a wooden workspace and includes holes for mounting dedicated clamps. Unlike the laser or 3D printing tool heads, you perform calibration once the CNC is ready for processing. After securing the material to the workspace, you set the origin. Next, you run the toolpath over the material to ensure everything is positioned correctly. Finally, you set the Z-axis height. This is similar to the method for setting the Z-axis height on a 3D printer, where you adjust it by placing a sheet of paper between the CNC head and the material being processed.
When CNC machining, the emergency stop button on the control module is very useful. You can quickly halt operations before the tool head touches the clamps.

Snapmaker Luban offers preset settings for various types of tool heads, making it easy for beginners to get started. The sample model provided by Snapmaker is the "Luban Lock," which allows you to machine a puzzle-like piece from the included 10mm MDF board. The piece below was finished in just 36 minutes, with extremely smooth edges.

Lastly, let's summarize everything!
Snapmaker Artisan is an innovative 3-in-1 machine. Building on the functionality, performance, and size of the Snapmaker 2.0, it allows for 3D printing, laser engraving, and CNC machining all in one machine. It is particularly noteworthy that it achieves high precision in all three of these modules and applications. While not necessarily the fastest compared to dedicated machines, it still achieves excellent speeds. Achieving such quality in each application is largely due to its robust construction, user-friendly interface, and especially the highly refined Luban software. Although the initial cost is high, considering the versatility and performance of having three functions in one, it is a product worth the investment, especially if you do not have the space to install three separate machines.

Compared to the previous generation, the Artisan has evolved significantly. Switching between modes is quick and easy, eliminating the need for the large screws used in the past. This 3D printer is very large, supports dual-color printing, and is equipped with a full-metal hot end. An enclosure is now included, making 3D printing with engineering-grade materials easier. The laser is faster and more powerful, capable of cutting 8mm thick wood and acrylic. The CNC functionality has improved by 300% compared to its predecessor, with speeds doubled. However, considering the space savings from consolidating three machines into one, and the availability of dedicated software to operate all functions, these performance improvements are well justified.
However, the Artisan requires sufficient space for installation. Still, from hobbyists wanting to try new creative ideas to professionals needing a 3-in-1 machine, the Snapmaker Artisan is a suitable choice for a wide range of users!
