【Ultrasonic Cutter Unboxing】7 Little-Known Tips for the Phrozen Sonic Saber Ultrasonic Cutter

If you haven’t heard of the Sonic Saber Ultrasonic Cutter yet, you might be missing out on a handy tool that can streamline your post-3D printing finishing process, especially support removal. In this article, we’ll take a deep dive into the features of this ultrasonic cutter and explain why so many people are eager to get their hands on one. Let’s get started!

Now that your model has finished printing, it's time for the post-processing phase, which includes cleaning and curing. This involves thorough washing to remove uncured resin, post-curing to fully harden the model, removing support structures, and even sanding or painting.

Some might find support removal to be a tedious task. Particularly when creating complex models, placing supports can be quite challenging. Too few supports can lead to print failures, while too many or overly thick supports make removing the marks left behind a difficult chore. Therefore, for everyone who enjoys 3D printing, finding the optimal balance through experience and practice is key.

Included with the Ultrasonic Cutter: 1 pair of level 5 cut-resistant gloves, user manual, warranty card, hex key, spare bolts, and spare blades

The ultrasonic cutter harnesses the power of ultrasonic cutting. Its sharp precision blade vibrates at an incredible rate of 40,000 times per second, making it easy to remove support structures. It is also an excellent tool for trimming and finishing printed models.

Testing on Resin Models

Efficiently remove 3D print supports—say goodbye to traditional utility knives!

Until now, common methods for removing supports from 3D printed models included tearing them off by hand or using traditional utility knives, hobby knives, or pliers for delicate parts. While these methods are cost-effective, they are time-consuming and can be very difficult when dealing with high-hardness resin. Furthermore, the small bumps left behind after cutting the supports are another issue. These marks often require extensive sanding and finishing work, which can not only damage the model but also cause you to lose fine details.

You can even fix the marks left by tearing off supports using the ultrasonic cutter!

The ultrasonic cutter features an intuitive pen-style design, allowing you to precisely cut at the base of the support and prevent unsightly, unwanted bumps from being left on the model's surface. The thin blade easily reaches into the textured parts of the model's surface, making it simple to remove resin support remnants.
Even if you remove supports before post-curing, there may still be marks left over from the tearing process. In such cases, simply graze the blade over the support mark to easily shave away unwanted remnants. Just be careful not to shave away the model's details.

Adjusting and Removing "Elephant Foot" from 3D Printed Resin Models

If you are 3D printing in a space with significant temperature fluctuations, you may have experienced, as we have, parts that don't fit together well during assembly. This is because temperature changes can cause protrusions or hole dimensions to become excessively large. It is never a pleasant experience after spending hours printing and washing a model. However, there is no need to get angry or throw everything away yet!!!

Adjusting Oversized Joints with the Ultrasonic Cutter

Carefully shave down the oversized protrusions on the model parts, working layer by layer until they fit smoothly into their corresponding holes. With the ultrasonic cutter, you can cut through printed resin models as if you were cutting through room-temperature butter. It is characterized by its soft and smooth cutting action.

Testing on Other Materials
Leather
You cannot cut through leather in a single pass; it takes about 2 to 3 passes. It is an extremely useful tool for making light scores and creating fine details.

Acrylic Pipe
While it is difficult to cut an acrylic pipe with a standard utility knife in 1 or 2 passes, the Sonic Saber's high vibration frequency makes it easy.

Bamboo Skewers
A multi-function knife will barely leave a mark on a bamboo skewer. Conversely, even if the Sonic Saber doesn't cut through the skewer in one go, it can quickly make a very deep incision. Like with leather, this is a major benefit for adding fine details to wooden crafts.

Popsicle Stick
When cutting a popsicle stick, start from the correct angle and move the blade slowly from the edge. The key is not to try to cut straight through immediately.

PLA Sheet
As with popsicle sticks, it may take some time to cut through with the power of the Sonic Saber. It is easier to cut when operated at the correct angle.

Safety Design, Button Operation

While this cutter is just as sharp as typical utility knives on the market, safety was a priority during the design of the ultrasonic cutter. You must hold down the button on the pen-style body to activate the vibrations. This might seem like an unnecessary operation at first, but it's easy to get absorbed in your work and accidentally drop the tool. This feature prevents it from vibrating and causing damage to your surroundings should it fall.

Phrozen Ultrasonic Cutter Standard Utility Knife
Can cut beyond flat surfaces Requires cutting on a flat surface (using a cutting mat)
No need to apply force (automatic ultrasonic vibration) Force must be applied (manual cutting)
Relatively saves time and effort Relatively requires more time and effort

Time is money!!! The Sonic Saber is a 2-in-1 post-processing tool that supports both cutting and scraping. It can significantly reduce work time and labor, increasing the overall efficiency of your post-3D printing finishing process.
