【3Devo】New SLS powder recycling process makes 3D printing green and sustainable
Waste generation is a major challenge in 3D printing, especially when using SLS and Multi-Jet Fusion (MJF) technologies, which can produce up to 60% residual powder, resulting in significant material waste and waste disposal issues.
3devo stated that this development addresses the issue of SLS powder waste and has the potential to reduce the environmental impact and operating costs of industries using 3D printing.
To promote sustainable development in the laminate manufacturing industry, the newly launched process transforms waste SLS powder into reusable wires.
This will provide manufacturers in the aerospace, automotive, medical, and education sectors with a practical and environmentally friendly alternative.

3devo's recycling solutions

One of the key advantages of 3devo's recycling solutions is the increased scope of experimentation and application. By converting waste SLS powder into filaments, users are no longer limited by high costs and a limited supply of new raw materials. This allows for more frequent prototyping and trial runs, facilitates greater customization, and enables complex projects that would otherwise incur very high material costs using traditional methods.

Through this innovative process, 3devo addresses a major hurdle by providing a viable recycling solution, enabling industries to significantly reduce waste and contribute to a more sustainable future. The recycled filament also boasts high quality, meeting the needs of a wide range of applications, allowing manufacturers to ensure their prints remain high-performing and reliable.

One notable success story involves a new client in the US who had been seeking a sustainable solution for SLS waste for years. 3devo's materials experts were able to meet this need and demonstrate the practical application and effectiveness of their recycling process.

At Formnext 2023, 3devo introduced Filament Maker TWO . Filament Maker TWO is an enhanced version of its wire production technology, incorporating advanced features for better control and precision, and is tailored for research, education, and production.
The 3Devo Plastic Shredder GP20 can recycle plastics of any shape and size into granular 3D printing material. This dual design combines a smart plastic shredder with an integrated pelletizer, allowing you to focus on your needs. The shredder's functionality gives you the freedom and flexibility to integrate it into any project in any industry.

The laminate manufacturing industry achieves responsible growth through material sustainability.

In the journey toward a green and sustainable 3D printing industry, many other manufacturers besides 3Devo are making efforts.

Filamentive, a UK-based 3D printing supplies manufacturer, has launched Economy PLA, a 3D printing supply made from up to 99.99% recycled materials from post-industrial waste. This eco-friendly liner is available in black and white and sold in 1kg spools on the Filamentive website and at authorized retailers.
The budget-friendly PLA maintains high quality and performance while reducing pollution risks. Previously, the company also launched PLA Tough yarn made from renewable sugarcane, which is biodegradable and packaged in recyclable cardboard spools.

Montreal-based recycled filament manufacturer Nefilatek has developed 3D printing filaments made from 100% recycled plastic. The company has launched Nefila HIPS Black (high-impact polystyrene) and Nefila PC (polycarbonate) filaments , featuring reusable spool holders and eco-friendly packaging. The HIPS filaments, sourced from Montreal's electronic waste, offer impact and heat resistance comparable to standard ABS and can be lubricated with environmentally friendly oils.
Furthermore, Nefila PC, made from recycled polycarbonate, offers robust mechanical properties and a wide temperature range (-50°C to +130°C), making it suitable for technical applications. These filaments provide an environmentally friendly alternative, reducing the environmental footprint of 3D printing while maintaining high performance.

By focusing on the sustainability of materials and filaments, the 3D printing industry can expect long-term environmental health protection, regulatory compliance, and economic viability, ensuring that the industry's growth is responsible and beneficial to future generations.
