Formlabs Tough 2000 V2 Engineering Resin: A Strong Material for the Form 4 Series
Formlabs Tough 2000 Resin V2 is a high-strength, engineering-grade photopolymer resin developed specifically for the Form 4 series. It offers excellent toughness, heat resistance, and a matte surface finish, making it ideal for functional prototypes, jigs, enclosures, snap-fit parts, and end-use parts.
Mechanical Properties of Tough 2000 V2 and Its Applicability as an ABS Grade
Formlabs Tough 2000 V2 boasts an impact strength of 305 J/m², an elongation at break of 79%, and a heat deflection temperature of 70°C under a 0.45 MPa load, comparable to injection-molded ABS materials. It also demonstrates greater application flexibility across multiple mechanical property metrics.
Compared to its previous generation, Tough 2000 V2 has three times higher impact strength, along with further improvements in heat resistance and surface quality. The new formulation results in a deeper color and a matte surface finish. For functional prototypes and end-use parts, visual contrast and scratch resistance are as crucial as mechanical properties.

Workflow Combining Form 4 Series and Tough 2000 V2
Replacing resin tanks and material cartridges on the Form 4 series is highly intuitive. Once a resin tank is installed, the machine automatically detects and identifies the new cartridge, prompting the user to open the top cap and allow the resin to flow in. It can also detect incorrect tank orientation, preventing resin spills and the need for cleaning.
The updated PreForm includes many new features. The "Z-axis bleed compensation function" improves the printing accuracy of threaded holes, overhangs, and bottom surfaces, making it particularly suitable for jigs, enclosures, and snap-fit parts—common applications for Tough 2000 V2.
A "low-density support printing setting" for Tough 2000 V2 is also being gradually released. By increasing the size of contact points while reducing their number, post-processing (support removal) becomes easier, and the surface finish at the support contact areas improves. This perfectly complements the matte texture emphasized by the V2 series.
PreForm can quickly and automatically place support structures, making it easy to prepare even complex parts for printing. While Tough 2000 V2 itself is somewhat viscous, its odor is relatively mild, making it distinctly easier to use in a studio environment compared to FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) ABS.

Post-processing Experience with Form Wash V2 and Form Cure V2
With the Form 4 series, switching between different resins is easy: simply remove the resin tank containing the current material, store it properly, and install a new tank. The sealed, stackable design of the resin tanks makes material changes and storage more efficient.
The only component that needs cleaning is the build platform, which is part of the standard workflow. Remove the platform, place it on its dedicated metal stand, detach the magnetic plate, and clean it with isopropyl alcohol (IPA).
Since Formlabs material specifications are usually very stable, "ease of use" becomes even more critical. The reliable production flow combining the Form 4 and Tough 2000 V2 reduces the risk of print failures, making it ideal for studios and small manufacturing operations that require consistent output.
Form Wash V2 further enhances the washing experience, especially when processing high-viscosity resins like Tough 2000. Form Cure V2 also features a larger post-curing space and a refined operational design, allowing it to cure Tough 2000 parts in about 10 minutes.
The post-curing performance of Form Cure V2 has been significantly improved compared to the previous generation. UV output is 4x greater, heating speed is 5x faster, and the curing chamber volume has increased by 1.3x. Post-curing completes the chemical reactions initiated during the printing process, further improving dimensional stability, toughness, heat resistance, and creep resistance, while also making the surface harder and less tacky.
Functional Part Printing Applications with Tough 2000 V2
Using Tough 2000 V2 allows for excellent precision and durability. While the resolution is slightly lower than model resins, it still reproduces intricate surface details while providing high strength and impact resistance.
PreForm automatically handles support structures, so users only need to fine-tune angles, slightly reduce the number of supports, or add mini-rafts to prepare most functional parts for printing.
Tough 2000 V2 can be used to produce functional parts like backpack buckles. While such parts were traditionally often 3D printed using FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) methods, the Form 4 and Tough 2000 V2 enable smooth printing of various sizes of buckles, which maintain excellent performance even under load.
In addition to buckles, it can be applied to load-bearing parts such as bicycle pedals, door hooks, and closet hangers. The printed parts have a very clean surface, with crisp details like embossed text, and can withstand the stresses of everyday use.

Precision Model Resin: Extreme Detail Expression
If you need to print extremely fine objects, you can choose Formlabs Precision Model Resin. While Formlabs positions this as a dental material, it also performs excellently for complex design models and engineering models.
Precision Model Resin can perfectly reproduce large models and rich surface details. Its formulation is designed to achieve over 99% alignment between the printed surface and the digital model, keeping tolerances within 100 microns, thereby ensuring extremely high reproducibility.
The beige color and matte surface make minute surface features clearly visible. In the dental field, this means clearer margins on prosthetic models. For validating robot models, it allows for clear representation of fine details, surface textures, and antenna structures.
Compared to traditional gray model resins, Precision Model Resin prints 3x faster on the Form 4 and offers superior opacity and surface clarity. Post-processing steps are also relatively simple: washing takes only 5 minutes, followed by 5 minutes of drying/curing at room temperature, or 1 minute in a Form Cure V2.
The Form 4 series boasts an extremely stable success rate. It maintains reliable output even when processing AI-generated models that require automatic mesh repair by PreForm, or complex workflows involving multiple material changes and switching back to original resins.
