To encourage university students around the world to experiment with different technologies and develop various types of electric off-road motorcycles, the "International Smart Motorcycle Challenge" is held annually. The Spanish ELISAVA racing team participated with a "Mountain Rescue Off-Road Motorcycle" theme, using a BCN3D 3D printer to create 19 mechanical parts, ultimately winning 5 awards. See their journey below:
Off-road motorcycles designed specifically for mountain rescue need to be able to handle any emergency situation in the ever-changing mountainous terrain. Strength, speed, resistance, and stability must all be strictly controlled!
When developing motorcycle parts that come into contact with batteries and electronic devices, the ELISAVA racing team uses ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) filament , which effectively isolates resistance and achieves low static electricity. To improve the motorcycle's abrasion resistance, PP (polypropylene) filament is used as the main material for mudguards, which are most susceptible to impact and friction ( click here: 3D printing filament comparison guide ). During the development process, the shape and surface finish of parts can also be quickly tested and modified.
BCN3D uses IDEX (Independent Dual Extruders) 3D printing technology , where the two printhead systems are completely separate and move independently, ensuring that the nozzle paths do not interfere with each other during operation. By using Mirror Mode, objects can be 3D printed simultaneously and symmetrically, effectively saving the team significant production time. The ELISAVA racing team, through 3D printing technology , not only broke the established processes for manufacturing automotive and motorcycle parts, but also successfully produced robust, durable, and ready-to-use parts, standing out among numerous competitors and ultimately winning 5 awards.
