Make Big Projects Easy: Bambu Lab Announces the R1 55W CO₂ Laser Cutter and Engraver
Bambu Lab has taken a giant step beyond 3D printing by announcing the new R1 55W CO₂ Laser Cutter and Engraver. Carrying forward Bambu Lab’s philosophy of prioritizing automation, ease of use, and integrated desktop manufacturing, the R1 makes cutting and engraving materials like wood, acrylic, and leather more intuitive for workshops, design studios, and professional production environments.
The R1 features a 55W CO₂ laser with a maximum processing speed of 1000 mm/s. It is equipped with features such as automatic optical axis calibration, image-based alignment, autofocus, vibration compensation, and multi-layered safety monitoring. For users familiar with Bambu Lab’s 3D printing equipment, the R1 is a product that expands the possibilities of desktop manufacturing into laser processing.
One Laser, Endless Materials
A major strength of the CO₂ laser is its ability to handle materials that are difficult for diode lasers to process directly, such as transparent acrylic and glass. The R1 supports cutting and engraving on wood, acrylic, leather, paper, and fabric, and can also engrave glass, stone, and certain coated metal surfaces.
Regarding cutting performance, it handles thicker wood and acrylic with ease. According to official Bambu Lab information, it can process black walnut plywood up to approximately 18 mm thick and acrylic up to approximately 20 mm thick. The standard work area is 600 × 300 mm, and when combined with the Conveyor accessory, it can process long materials up to approximately 3,000 mm.
Automatic Optical Axis Calibration Reduces Tedious Manual Setup
Conventional CO₂ laser systems guide the beam to the focusing lens via multiple reflective mirrors. If the mirrors shift, it can affect laser output and processing performance. In typical equipment, users had to repeatedly perform manual tests and adjustments.
The R1's Auto Laser Alignment function detects the beam position via sensors and works with motorized mirror adjustment mechanisms to correct it. This automates a process that previously required manual adjustment of each mirror, significantly simplifying daily maintenance and setup.
TriSense System: Integrated Position, Height, and Motion Detection
The R1's TriSense system integrates cameras, lasers, and encoders to recognize the position of materials and designs, measure the height of the processing surface, and track the motion status of the tool head. The system includes a BirdsEye camera, a tool head camera, a Pinpoint alignment laser, a Distance Measurement Laser, and XY-axis encoders.
This system not only assists with autofocus but also supports features like curved surface engraving, alignment for small objects, and contour-matched processing. For tasks requiring precise alignment of laser processing to printed patterns, official information cites a contour tracking accuracy within 0.2 mm.
Inheriting Bambu Lab's High-Speed Motion Control Technology
In laser processing, the tool head frequently accelerates, decelerates, and changes direction. The R1 applies the motion control expertise Bambu Lab developed for 3D printing equipment to laser processing, featuring Vibration Compensation and Speed-Synced Laser Power control.
Vibration Compensation suppresses mechanical resonance caused by sudden direction changes, keeping edges sharp. Speed-Synced Laser Power adjusts energy output according to movement speed, reducing inconsistencies in shading or depth that arise due to speed variations within a single design. By using the optional Vision Encoder calibration plate, mechanical deviations accumulated over long-term use can be further corrected.
Comprehensive Safety Design
When fully enclosed, the R1 is designed as a Class 1 laser system according to IEC 60825-1. The unit is equipped with safety features such as an auto-stop mechanism upon opening the lid, flame monitoring, and an emergency stop switch, while lateral airflow exhausts smoke generated during processing out of the chamber.
The optional E1 Pro Air Purifier can be connected directly to the R1's exhaust port, treating smoke, fine particles, and odors with multi-layer filters and activated carbon. An Auto Fire Extinguishing system is also available as an option.
Integrated into the Bambu Lab Ecosystem
The R1 inherits the ease of use of Bambu Lab's existing accounts and software, and can be operated via Bambu Suite for Windows and macOS. Laser-related content is also expanding on MakerWorld, allowing creators already using Bambu Lab's 3D printing equipment to integrate laser cutting and engraving into the same ecosystem.
Who is the R1 Designed For?
The R1 is primarily targeted at creators, small workshops, designers, woodworkers, custom goods manufacturers, educational facilities, and makerspaces who wish to incorporate laser processing into their existing production workflows. For those already utilizing 3D printing, laser processing broadens the range of capabilities to include cutting sheet materials, wood, transparent acrylic, and leather, as well as engraving glass. With the Conveyor accessory, it can even handle long-material processing.
