[Unboxing & Hands-on] Bambu Lab X1 Carbon Combo Review: A Comprehensive Look at Assembly and Software Operation

3DMART |

【Unboxing & Hands-on】Putting the Mythical Bambu Lab X1 Carbon Combo to the Test: Full Reveal of Assembly and Software!
Hailed as a game changer in the 3D printing world, the Bambu Lab X1 Carbon has sent shockwaves through the industry! It has also become one of the most successful hardware products in the history of the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter and was named one of TIME Magazine's "Best Inventions of 2022." What exactly makes it so appealing to so many people? In this article, we’ll unbox it, test it, and show you what it’s all about!

1. Unboxing Procedure
To begin unboxing, first remove the two cushioning materials. There are two arrows on the box; remove the plastic bands on both sides, and you can lift the outer box to reveal the unit.

Remove the top cover and take out the top layer of cushioning. The AMS is secured inside the chamber. Use the included tools to remove the screws; the red arrows indicate their locations.

Take out the contents of the toolkit one by one. Included are: the AMS automatic filament feed box, touch screen, filament holder, power cable, two sets of connecting cables, tool set, 2x Bambu cool plate replacement films, 2x hotend nozzle cleaning pads, solid glue for heatbed, nozzle cleaning needle, hardened steel 0.4mm nozzle unit, 2x filament cutters, replacement blades for the Bambu heatbed scraper, and 3 rolls of 250g Bambu filament (random colors).

When you open the glass door, there are red arrows at the bottom. First, remove these two screws. This will allow you to lift the AMS out from the top. Remove the cardboard protecting the print head and take out the cushioning for the filament cleaning box.

Remove the AMS securing bracket. Using the included tool, align it with the position marked by the red arrow to remove it.

Peel off the tape securing the touch screen connection cable and move the cable slightly. Try not to move it too much so as not to damage the cable. Align the connection cable with the port to connect it, and once finished, attach it to the main unit as shown in the instructions. Ensure the face of the screen is pointing upward.

Align the connection cable with the port to connect it, and once finished, attach it to the main unit as shown in the instructions. Ensure the face of the screen is pointing upward.

Connect the AMS filament tube to the printer's filament inlet, and insert the two connection cables into their respective pins. Connect the 4-pin to the 4-pin and the 6-pin to the 6-pin.

Peel off all protective film from the AMS and open the AMS lid. Open the lid for the desiccant compartment, remove the desiccant packaging, and place it back in its original position.

Open the latch on the white filament inlet, insert the filament to the appropriate length, and the AMS will automatically detect the filament material.

2. Calibration Procedure
You can complete the calibration by simply following the instructions on the screen. There is no need for any extra effort during the calibration process. It is normal to hear some noise during calibration.
1. Set the system language

2. Terms of service and precautions

3. Whether to participate in the improvement program

4. Press the calibration button to start the automatic calibration

5. Once finished, the Bambu Lab welcome screen will be displayed.

3. Print Operation
Remove the printing plate, apply a thin layer of the manufacturer’s original solid glue for the heatbed, then align and return it to its original position.

Download and install Bambu Studio. Bambu Studio supports 3MF files and enables multi-color printing, supporting up to 16 colors. Load the file you wish to print into the software, set the parameters, and click preview. Click "Export to Slicer" in the upper right corner, then save the file to the SD card to start printing.

There is an SD card slot on the right side of the touch screen where you can insert an SD card. On the touch screen, you can check the thumbnail of the model to be printed, estimated print time, and the amount of filament used.

The LiDAR and AI system automatically inspect the print quality of the first layer and will display a notification if there are any anomalies. It's very convenient!

4. Print Results
This time, we printed a Mario game character. It took about 8 hours. It's extremely convenient because it can switch colors automatically. We are amazed by the print speed of the Bambu Lab X1 Carbon! It has an acceleration of 500 m/s² and a print size of 256×256×256 mm. Because you can place multiple models at once and print them simultaneously, you can work efficiently without wasting any time!

[FAQ]
1. How long does it take from unboxing to starting the first print?

You can set up the X1 in under 30 minutes, including removing the heatbed and AMS fixing screws and downloading the software.
2. Does the printer have 4 modes? What are the differences in speed and noise between the modes, especially Silent mode?
Each mode adjusts the original G-code's acceleration and speed based on a set factor. Silent mode uses the lowest acceleration and speed factor.
3. How do I update the software?
The X1 and X1 Carbon support OTA software updates. When new software is available to download and install, an update notification will appear on the printer screen.

[Filament]
1. Are there any filaments that the AMS does not support?

*The AMS does not support filaments that are too soft, such as TPU.
*Using fragile filaments or filaments containing particles may cause the AMS to malfunction.
2. Can I use the AMS to switch between different materials like ABS and PLA in a single print?
Due to the material properties of the filaments themselves, mixing filaments with different properties in a print can lead to nozzle clogs or results that fall short of expectations. Therefore, we do not recommend printing by mixing filaments with different properties.
Also, to reduce the risk of failure, Bambu Studio limits mixed printing of filaments with a temperature difference exceeding 15°C.
3. Do the X1 series printers support third-party filaments?
Yes, they do. Any 1.75mm diameter filament can be used.

[Slicing]
1. What printer features cannot be used with third-party slicers?

Features such as the Automatic Material System (AMS), first-layer LiDAR inspection, and spaghetti detection are not available with third-party slicers.
2. Do the X1 series printers support third-party slicers?
Yes, you can use third-party slicers, though they may not be compatible with some of the printer's features. We recommend using Bambu Studio for optimal print results.
3. When printing using the AMS, does the slicer support filaments with different printing temperatures?
This depends on the adhesive strength between the materials and the temperature requirements of the print chamber.
For example, ABS and PLA have a large temperature difference, which can easily cause nozzle clogs, so mixed-color printing is not supported.

[Accessories]
1. Can I use other types of print plates?

Cool Plate: Supports print temperatures up to 120°C.
Engineering Plate: Supports print temperatures up to 120°C.
High Temperature Plate (PEI material): Supports print temperatures up to 120°C.
2. Does the AMS support third-party spools?
Yes, it does. However, third-party spools must meet the specifications of 50–68mm in width and 192–202mm in diameter.
3. Can I check nozzle usage time to determine when to replace it?
We recommend judging when to replace the nozzle by checking its wear and tear rather than just by usage time. Because nozzle wear varies depending on the printing environment and filament type, you may need to replace it accordingly.
